Bought a PJ D7 14' Dump Trailer

Max trailer Weight

Has anyone out there ordered tires online. I just ordered 6 tires for my dually from Discount tire. They were MORE than $100 less PER TIRE than my local tire store on Michelin LTX M/S2 tires. I could not justify buying local. Any input?"

There must not be a Discount Tire within driving distance? No matter what anyone says, $600 savings is a lot of money. Will you mount them yourself?

I can see where it might be embarrassing to have/ask a local dealer to mount and balance them. Somewhat like going to Safeway, buying some fresh ground beef then having McDonalds cook it for you. I am NOT looking at you sideways..... just sayin.

I have bought tires online from TireRack for years and have had good luck, low prices and fast shipping. They have arrangements with many local tire shops nationwide for mounting and balancing if you need it.

I have purchased numerous tires from the Tire Rack as well over the years. Mainly because they had the tires I was looking for when no one else carried them. You do have to remember though that after shipping, and having them mounted and balanced, the savings is not as great as one would think. I prefer purchasing my tires locally whenever possible...

I ordered a set of Goodyear G614s from Trailer Tire and Wheel. A local Michelin dealer I know mounted and balanced the four tires for $50. Shipping cost was less than local sales tax, total savings was over $400.

Discount Tire Direct ships from AZ,so no tax or shipping to Cali. I've got Discount's here so it gives you ammo when you go in. They'll match the otd price. I knew a guy here that got a bad Toyo MT mailorder and he gave up trying to get a replacement.

We have purchased from the Tire Rack dozens of times, never had a single issue.
service was fast and order was always complete and accurate. I mount them myself so that's not an issue.

o i got good service but from them but the who finding a place to put them on and the cost of doing that i ended up about the same price, how ever i bought them whole sale local and i saved big time.

I have a local guy that is VERY eager to mount and balance. Will cost $50 so the savings of $550 on 6 tires is something that really appeals to me. I will give a full report when the tires arrive. Still I cant figure out how they beat the best I can do by that much and offer FREE shipping!!

When you buy several thousand tires at once, I'm sure the quantity discount kicks in !!!;)

TireRack Rocks! I buy so many tires from TireRack that my UPS guy knows me by name. TireRack has even shipped spare trailer tires to a hotel for me during a long summer vacation. Local tire shops are glad to mount tires, just call around.

I hope everybody remembers to check the date of manufacture on every tire they buy. The date is on every tire by Federal Mandate. If you see (13 10) on the side wall it means the tire was built the 13th week of the year 2010. DON'T listen to a dealer tell you "the date does not matter the tire is new, it has never been on the ground". BS It is worth repeating that a tire begins to deteriorate the day that it is built. It is difficult to throw away tires with good tread left on them but after six (6) years they are no longer safe. When the Highway Patrol investigates a bad accident they write down the date of manufacture and it gets entered into a data base. From this we know that in their seventh (7) year tires can throw rubber all over the highway. Trailer tires are a different story. They are marked ST (service trailer) They are built by a different process. They are built to LOOSE one third (1/3) of their strength in three (3) years. That is an industry SCAM. Trailer tires don't usually wear out the tread fast enough to bring you back to the dealer as son as they would like. I use Pick Up Tuck tires on my trailer. A dealer will tell you you can't do that. More BS. If the tire is rated for the weight you are hauling you are doing nothing wrong. I know a Tire Dealer that owns a three axle boat trailer and will not use ST tires. He got tired of all the tire failures. I have learned what I know about tire failures the HARD WAY. That is what this site is all about. To share knowledge and save the agony of not knowing what caused the problem until too late. I like the old saying "TOO SOON OLDT UND TOO LATE SCHMART"

Bought from Discount Tire for years, both mail order and at a store. They will put you in touch with somebody to mount and balance. Discount tire are good people

I always buy from Tire Rack. They list cooperating local installers (and their prices) on their web page, and I've had excellent luck using their installer near me. Online tires shipped, installed, and tax-free still blow away chain-store prices, not to mention the limited selection and knowledge the local guys have.

Once, when I got a nail in my sidewall and ruined a fairly new tire, a local tire shop cut their price close enough to Tire Rack that it was worth giving them the business rather than wait for the big brown truck to arrive; it never hurts to ask, if you're so inclined.

That said, I _would_ buy from a local, individually-owned (non-chain) shop where I could develop a relationship with the owner; I'd gladly pay extra for that. Also, the tire professionals at a shop specializing in commercial work (ie GCR Tire) can be worth the money. A big chain retail tire shop cares no more for a relationship with you than WalMart does, and I feel guilty every time I buy something at WalMart instead of a _quality_ local business.

Gonzo, don't forget to include in your cost equation the fact that Discount Tire and most other tire dealers, will rotate and balance your tires every 10K miles free if they do the initial installation. They will also fix flats free. Heck, Discount Tire will fix flats free on any vehicle I have, including my wheel barrow.

I have used Discount Tire Direct and Tire Rack. Both very good and less $$$ They will ship to stores they are affiliated with or direct to you. I like Tire Rack because they support my hobby; Autocrossing.
