I've been reading up on the cat versus no cat forums and I was wondering if anyone makes a cat that flows better than the stock cat?

in the first issue of diesel power [i still can't find the second issue :(] there was an ad for magnaflow who is suppose to be coming out with high flow diesel cats in 3. 5", 4" and 5"... maybe contact magnaflow as last i was on their website, i didn't see anything about their diesel cats...

Well, Im going to replace the muffler and I hear that it gets pretty loud without the cat. Plus, in my county they test diesels for exhaust "opacity", what ever that is

they basically load the engine up on a dyno [some mph value in specific gear] with a light sensor strapped across the exhaust outlet... they measure for how much light is lost... 0% is full light transfer, 100% is no light transfer. the usual pass/fail point is around 40%

Any stock diesel made since about 98 should pass an opacity test, Unless something is wrong. They are pretty much a joke, these newer engines, shouldnt even register on an opacity meter. Most of them are just a snap throttle test( a blip of the go pedal) at a lot of places. Now if they measure for hydrocarbon , or CO with another analyzer, you may have an issue.

We have to smog in Vegas as of last year. The test is a joke but no kitty no pass. They run the truck up to 40 mph and has a fail rate of 30%. There is no load on the dyno so my results were 2% with an early 99 PSD last week but failed because it does not have the cat under it. So I ordered a 4" race muffler from summit for $38 had a muffler shop add it and it passed. All the guy saw was another pipe under it beside the muffler.

He did tell me that the rest of the country will be testing in bigger city soon. so my advise to you is to keep the kitty if you remove it just incase you have to test in the future or you can punch the guts out.
