Bed Problem

Looking to register a CA 1997 12v in NV (Washoe Co. ). Truck has:

-0-plate slid forward (can easily slide it back)

-4gsk with 60 lb springs

-4" sewer pipe (no cat or muffler)

-loose AFC (can easily tighten 'er up alot)

-stock turbo hx35 with no wastegate

-stock 215 nozzles and delivery valves

-CA truck, but had no EGR

-3 piece exh manifold

-timing ~17. 5

Do they do the snap test? The website says they hold full throttle for a few seconds "to ensure proper functioning of the speed governor. " NO ONE is going to do that to my truck! Especially when it'll rev to 4+. Also, is the cat required? I think that some trucks didn't come with them.

What have others had to do to pass this dang test? CA doesn't require it so therefore the mods were done. Or should I just get a PO box in Elko? The truck doesn't smoke when driven nicely, but will freakin go from 1200 rpm all the way up to 3500 (highest I've taken it) when you hammer on it. Any help here would be very appreciated!

It is my understanding smog tests also include a visual inspection, just to see if the emission equipment is there. A "hollowed out" cat would pass the visual test. Trucks manufactured after January 1, 2004 until December 31, 1997 (1994-1998 model year) had a cat. Early 1994 models (before Jan 1, 1994) had a 3" to 4" pipe where the cat was later installed. 1998. 5-2002 (24 valve) built after Dec 31, 1997) had a "resonator" instead of the cat. 2003-2004 models built before Jan 1, 2004 had no cat or resonator. All after Jan 1, 2004 have a cat.

Had my 96 done a couple weeks ago, they strap it down have you run it up to 40 mph and hold it there a few seconds, there is also the visual as stated above.

I used to have mine done at Sierra Injection. They never gave me any hassles, and probably would give you any problems. I'm glad I moved to Lyon Co. No more smog checks.

Passed!

An update and conclusion: the 97 passed with 1. 0% opacity at 40 mph with 15% engine load on the dyno. I don't know how anyone would fail this kind of test, and the guy at Sierra Injection said no one fails if they have a cat. Oh yeah, that cost 600 bucks for a "new" one installed. I had it turned down so much I couldn't hit 15 lbs boost without going up to 3200 rpm (flat-ground plate all the way back, housing all the way back, AFC TIGHT). I don't think I needed it turned down that far... . Back to normal now, so beware of a red ext cab with 33's and a dented tailgate...
