I have been researching turbos all week long and have decided to rebuild mine myself, if I even need to yet.

End play . 022 spec. is . 001 to . 005

I have printed off the repair manual and data sheet from cummins and it seems doable. I will probably get the kit from htturbo. anyone have any advice or experiences to offer. I searched for a thread but couldn't find one on someone who did it themself. Anyone know how much in and out play before it will start to rub?

Mine was leaking oil out the exhaust side and running down the waist gate actuator bracket at under 100k miles, not sure of the exact figure now. I bought the kit from HTT in SLC for $81 including tax and shipping. This was back in '02. Pictures of the leak and the turbo taken apart here: http://picasaweb.google.com/mark9474/TruckStuff

Like the others have said it's an easy job. Just make sure you mark the relation of the shaft and the wheel to maintain the factory balance or at least close to it.

The seal rings on mine were worn. I now have 355k total miles on the truck and no visible leak from the turbo. What's odd about my truck is that I have had several leaks at low mileage such as rear pinion, front crank and turbo that have done way better with my repairs then they ever did originally.
