Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) anyone replaced NV4500 with G56 on 1999 3500

Just spent $800 today to have 5th gear nut replaced. Would like to change over to 6sp as tow an RV on winter and summer trips. Have 232k miles on truck original transmission lost 3rd gear replaced with one from Standard Transmission reverse went out after 100k miles. Total rebuild on latest one around 185k. Lost 5th gear out of Alpine Tx drove to Deming NM in 4th at 50-55mph where I had repairs made. Have had 5th gear nut replaced number of times. Would like to try something different as have spent enough on the NV 4500. Did search and find that the NV5600 may not be the way to go. Thought would go to best place to get the best info.

I know it's been done. Probably the best way to go, given many rebuild parts are no longer being made for the 4500 and 5600.

I do have a TDR buddy with several BRAND NEW (NOT rebuildt) NV4500 transmissions. Wants $2k, including the fluid.

I used to tow mine in 5th. Never again. 5th is just not strong enough.

800 to replace the nut that is a minor job. . just a few hours
