I have a 1995 4x4 auto. I wonder if 295's or even 305/70's will be hard on the trans or TC? Will I lose alot of power? Will be running tires on stock 2001 8" alum. At this time I'm running 285's on stock chrome 6. 5" Does anybody have pic's of 295's or 305's? (TFATH)

The 295's and 305's are not much taller (maybe 1/2" depending on brand) so I don't think you will notice any change in power if you are running 285's now. For that reason too, I do not think they will place any extra strees on the trans.

Are you aware of the little issues putting newer alloy wheels on an older truck? Just a heads up if you did not know.

JB,

If you go purely by the metric sizing a 285/75r16 and a 305/70r16 have the same diameter of 32. 8inches. I don't know what tires you are running now. A bfg atko 295 which is what I run on my truck is 33. 5 inches in diameter. No big deal you will actually be reducing your unsprung weight by going to the alloy wheels there by reducing the stress on your drive train. ANyway you are fine.

Cooker asked the big question, Are you aware of the issue in putting 2001 alloys on a per 2000 truck???

Well, I am not sure about JBoone, but I don't know the issues with swapping 2001 wheels on a pre 2000 (I was thinking about doing this sometime in the future)... What does that consist of?

JBoone: Going to 295's will not put any kind of stress on your drivetrain that your truck can't handle. Don't worry about that part. And you won't loose any power, so I wouldn't worry about that either.

WKener,

On my 95 . I will have to take about a 1/16 + or - off the brake drum. On a 97 to 2000 . You have to do the same plus grind a little off the control arms in the front (if they hit). I think this is the way it goes. You can search this topic and get more info.

thanks,

JBoone

The man is on top of it!!!!!:D Oo. Oo.

I would go to 295 or stay at a 305. This is just my personal preference but I think the 305 is to wide for the height. JMO

Ted,

Do you like the BFG tires? Do they last long? I'm running Remington Wide Brutes (285's). Wont get but 16000 miles out of them. The BFG's seem to be very $$$.

JB,

I really like the bfg at ko. I have 28k on mine now and they are still kicking with over half the tread depth left. I will not denigh that they are expensive but they are high quality and wear well. In a 295/75 it is the only option that I know of.

Just as a base line from national tire the atko costs:

285/75- $167

295/75- $196

Another Option

You can get Nitto Terra Grapplers in a 295/75/16 size and they are less than BFG's. Nitto also offers a 305/70/16.

I decided to put a set on the truck, but I haven't had them long enough to pass a judgement on them. The only thing I can say is I really like the way they look :) From what I have found out, they are made by Toyo tire corp. and the feedback from TDR members makes the Toyos sound like a great wearing tire.

Here is my concern/question

Yesterday I had Bridgestone Dueler AT in 285/75/16 Installed.

With the wheel straight ahead, The outer edge is making contact with the pavement but the inner edge is not. (front tires). My shop manual says there is no adjustment for camber.

When changing the upper ball joint I saw the sleeve has a number on it, leading me to think there are other sleeves with other numbers, maybe the way to set them up at the factory.

Are the other sleeves obtainable? Would I screw something up lessening the amount of camber?

With the prior 235/85s I had on I could see the excessive wear on the outer edges but just kept rotating to try and keep up. I can tell with these wider/taller tires this wear will be aggravated.

Comments Please?

Recently put 295 Toyo's on my new 2002 steel wheels which are 7. 5". Tires look and run fine. I have 3:55's and I can idle away from stop in 4th gear and proceed down the road without accellerating!!! Lots of power still. I think they came out 35" tall. Planning to move to 19. 5" in time to handle the weight I want to dump on this truck. GE
