My brother found out about this company that makes vegetable oil conversion kits for diesel engines, check out the website, http://www.lovecraftbiofuels.com. My brother wants to try to run his 06 CTD on vegetable oil. I want to know if anyone has heard of running your truck on used oil from fast food restuarants?

I know a couple of guys with 1st gen trucks running some vegetable oil added to their diesel... ... usually 25% or so... . I'm thinking of making bio-diesel and have read several books and collected the equipment but haven't started yet.....

The problem I see... is I use several hundred gallons of diesel a month and the collection process is the key to doing this... collecting 100 or so gallons with each stop... . and do it in a way that your invited back to do it again.....

BTW I'd never add straight veg oil to my 3rd gen equipment... but would run 100% bio most of the time if we made it... ...

HERE is another. A co-worker of mine is currently pursuing a 3rd Gen from these guys with the system installed.

I have run a 50% blend in mine (Summer only) with no noticeable side effects except for that "fast food smell" :p

Hello MStrain,

Regarding your question: "I want to know if anyone has heard of running your truck on used oil from fast food restuarants?"

Definitely yes. A better place to find folks who do this, within TDR, is in the Alternative Fuels forum.

Better still there are a couple of threads with a lot of information. cj hall probably has the longest running thread: dse in truck 04-05 CTD.

He has a lot of information there on the fuel itself, and info on resources too (equipment, pumps, filters, etc).

I'm running a slightly different WVO blend than he is, and talk about it some here: Schur Ecofuel.

He has an 04 and an 05... mine is an 04. 5. We've both run up to and including 100% blend (not JUST the waste oil [WVO], but blended with other things to thin it so it is better suited to the engine and colder temperatures).

Don't rush into using waste oil - a lot of the people who would warn you off have either experienced or heard/read of those who've seriously damaged their engines because they started using WVO as an alternative fuel without having sufficient information to protect their trucks.

Few things which are worthwhile are 'automatic'.

I've been running it almost a year now, and am in the 20k-ish (haven't counted lately) mile range using various % of WVO-blend and #2 diesel. cj has even more miles on the stuff and I do.

So - thus far, we can tell you it can be done.

Regards,

Mark
