Competition Trimming water pump fins

Just wondering if anyone else has sever had a problem with totally shearing off a Dana80 yoke leaving nothing but pieces on the track? My brother has now done it twice now. The truck is a 97 Reg-cab and is right in about the 500hp range and has a big set of traction, blocked suspension. The first time it happened he was actually doing a burn out. This was shortly after he installed a few extra leaves in his spring pack. I would think that pinion angle would take out the u-joints before the entire yoke???

What do you guys think? The traction bars are atatched to the lower U-bolts below the axle, maybe weld the brackets to the axle instead?

I have seen 2 snap also. One of them is a member here and his snapped while only having a little less than 400hp.

I would switch to 1480 series. The 1480 yoke is about 2/3 the price of a 1410. You can buy the yoke, u joint, and have a weld in yoke installed for close to 200 bucks. Where if you installed 1410 you would have about 170 in just a yoke, u joint, and have the shaft checked to see if it is bent.

I have seen a similar situation, guy was breaking 1480 yokes, pinion was bent, if I recall correctly. Make sure the center section hasn't rotated on the tubes.

yeah its just 1410 right now. He is saving up for an HD T-case and then he is going to upgrade both shafts. So you he could actually get the 1480 yoke, joint and have the shaft fitted with a 1480 also? Hmmm, going to have to tell him about that. I will also have to check and see if the center section has rotated.

Here is a little vid of the pull and I messed up somehow editing it and didn't bother checking before posting it on U-Tube.

zstroken,

Have you seen anyone actually rotate the center section on the tubes in a Dana 80 rear?

I guess it's just one more thing to add to my list...

Personnally, if you are going to go ahead and upgrade to a 1480 u-joint as well as all the yokes, you might as well step up in driveshaft size to 4. 095" (my stock rear shaft was only 3. 5"). You may be able to sell you stock rear shaft to the next guy that twists his up and doesn't want to upgrade.

RyanB, what program do you use for editing of video? I need one...

Yep that was me i broke a stock yoke (1410) and i was just under 400hp at the time, But i was hooked to a sled! Did real bad things, put the drive shaft out of balance and cracked my t-case. Bad night!

Siting this year out till i can build the drivetrain!!

I haven't seen it, if I recall it was a truck in at haisleys shop that had the problem.

I welded up the center section on the ole Bigbaddode years ago just because I had heard rumor they were rotating them out East the welder was there and I had some nicad rod so why not as it sounded faesable.

I had the 1480 rear driveline and a 1410 front with the 271 T-case and could broil 36" boggers its a sweet stout set up even when bouncing, which we cured at the end of 2005 with the solid rear.

Wait, so when you guys are talking about "welding the center section" are you refering to welding the yoke to the pinion shaft or welding the spider gears in the carrier? Please clarify.

I have had no problems with my upgrade to a 1480 yoke, u-joint and driveshaft. Been through 6 hooks to the sled so far this year since that conversion and everything is holding up well. :)

Welding the pumpkin to the axles. There is a 1410 yoke to put on the front of the 241DHD. I would be careful running it on a truck with a lot of lift though.
