I know I read that 16. 5" rims won't fit on our new trucks, but has anyone tried any of the aftermarket ones? Eagles? I know most stick out a little more than stock, so thought they may clear the calipers ok. Ideas?
I doubt it, I just looked at the rear calipers and the 17's just barely clear. I would like a different rim only cuz the cast alloy wheel has that ugly hub cap. I can't find any wheels with the factory offset that will keep the rubber under the fender where it belongs.
16. 5's and 17's both share the same center section (the part that bolts to the hub), but the shells (the part the tire mounts to) have a different o. d. With that said the id of the shell is the same. Now this info applies to steel wheels as they are 2 seperate pieces welded together. Aluminum???
I'd bet a set of steel 16. 5's would clear, but with aluminum wheels the wheel itself is thicker thus reducing the i. d. The only way to know for sure is try one. Most tire and wheel shops would place a wheel (no tire needed) on the hub to see if it fits.
You do know that 16. 5 wheels do not have a safety beed in them. The bead seats are at a 15* angle and rely soley on air pressure to keep the tire seated. Not a problem unless you ever intend to air down for more traction. Do this and the tire will come off the wheel.
