Help with exhaust popping?

Installed MBRP's T-304 "Cool Duals" cat-back system on my 2005 QC LWB and now have a deafening resonance/drone when passing thru 2200 RPM under load (the kitty is still in place). S/W "Jason" this morning at MBRP - he recommended that I purchase their resonator # R1009 @ $155.

Before I spend even more of my hard earned $$$ on this system, I need to know if anyone else has had success with this particular resonator installed between the kitty and the muffler (where the LWB extension pipe would normally be on an MBRP system).

Does anyone know of any other solutions out there that work well?

. . . HELP!!!!!! :(

My Banks got real loud after a while.

I added the MBRP 30" resonator/muffler. Toned the exhaust down nicely. No cat, never had one, don't thind I ever will :D

I have the full turbo-back exhaust. I cut the pipe 10" aft of the downpipe flange, sort of where a cat would go. I cut out the straight section of the exhaust. It's a tight fit in there for most mufflers, but the MBRP is skinny enough to leave about 1" or more clearance all the way around. There's not enough movement to have it hit anything. I mounted the muffler so that the "open" side of the louvers face the rear of the truck.

I had the same problem on my 03 with the Banks system. I installed the MBRP muffler directly in front of the Banks(leaving Banks on) and it helped ALOT.

I still have a nice throaty sound but it did quite it down some, which I wanted.

Still, around 2100 rpm with a heavy load, I will get a little bit of a drone, but it is only up to less than 2200 rpm. It is much less than the Banks drone and it is easy to pass that rpm range.

I also removed my AFE system and eliminator pipe and replace the silencer ring and the stock intake system. Sounds more quite at idle and will drive it with a load on Mon.

Guess I'm getting old and like the silence better.

I don't have or plan to install any power mods, plenty of power the way it is, plus better longevity and no warranty issues.

Mark,

What options do I have if I have the cat back system already w/ the cat test pipe? Will a resonator fit in-line with it? Not that I want to change anything, just curious.

Mine was a single system that droned 1900-2100 & the MBRP resonator did help, they also wound up sending me a quieter version of the muffler. Mine is very quiet now, almost too quiet. It doesn't sound stock, but it's the quietest 4" system I've heard. If you want it real quiet, I'd ask Jason about the quieter version of the muffler they developed, he was great to deal with. It seems the LWB QC's are the most prone to the drone. I highly recommend using band clamps. I wrapped my down pipe with header wrap & that helped some too.

I install the race series muffler from magnaflow ,it will quite things down and almost eliminate all drone if install prior to any aftermarket Muffler,It will install in place of your last extension pipe with some modifications so you will not lose you frame bracket.

Coolslice,

Your sig says you have the 51 inch Donaldson, did that not quiet it enough??? I doubt if you have a cat back and the Donaldson that you woudl have much room to make the resonator fit, check to make sure you do. You need 18 inches of straight pipe to install it.

Mark @ DPPI

My mistake Mark. The Donaldson is gone and I have updated my sig. IMO, there was no benefit to remove the stock muffler for it. It was too quiet and EGT's were unchanged.

I got the MBRP cat back and test pipe from you a little over a month ago. . I was just curious as to what my options would be with this set up in the unlikely event that I choose to tone it down a tad in the future. Thanks.
