I have recently hauled a couple heavy loads of hay from eastern oregon here to the valley. When I am loaded I get a chatter/vibration from the rear of the truck on slow speed turns. It really feels like the limited slip is grabbing like with a Posi-trac rear end. My 67 Buick Riviera does the same thing but it is alot louder and really bad in reverse. Someone on this site has mentioned that when I am loaded (I had 6300 lbs on the rear axle) that the driveline angles are wrong and that is where my chatter is coming from. I was curious if I should have some of the amsoil additive for limited slip rear ends in my differential. I am running the severe gear 75W-90 oil in it. I thought that I read somewhere that there was no need for an additive, but I may be wrong.

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Don't put any additive in, it will only hurt it, not help it. Is the vibration only taking off from a stop, or only when turning a sharp corner?

Have been running Amsoil severge gear 75/90 for 25,000 miles WITH the additive and have had no issues. The additive I used was from amsoil. Before adding the additive had a very similar noise/issue even when unloaded. just another . 02

Your truck has the AAM differential, and does not have clutch packs in there, so the additional additive will not do anything for it. I think you have a different problem.

I had this experience, please read

I switched my 04. 5 to the AMSOIL and got the same result pulling my horse trailer. Come to find out Amsoil ALREADY HAD THE LS ADDITIVE BLENDED IN THE FLUID!!!!!!!! I never added it, but I sure got the chatter. As soon as I changed the fluid out to another hight quality brand, no more chatter!! Oo.

Was that on the 2002 truck or the 04 1/2?

Amsoilman,

In my post above I put that it was on my 04. 5, Have only had the 02 less than 2 weeks. When I called AMSOIL they said that I had been sent the wrong fluid. I guess one has the LS additive in it, the other does not. I just haven't had time to order and wait for the new fluid to come in. I am certain AMSOIL is a great product and have heard likewise. . I just got the wrong stuff... roper

What really is the problem, I wonder?

I currently have 46k on my truck. I change all the fluids at 15k intervals.

At 15k I changed out the fluid with the DC spec'd. synthetic, purchased at the dealer for $12/quart. Not long after, I started to have this chatter taking off around turns, especially when loaded or towing.

After about 5k miles and getting more annoyed with it, I picked up 5 quarts of Amsoil Severe Gear 75-90 and did the drain and fill.

The chatter disappeared. Now I run Amsoil in the trans and both axles.

I will say, however, that when I get near the 15k mark on the oil, the chatter starts to come back.

I think it's something related to the lousy LSD in our axles, not a lubrication problem. It seems the little brake shoes in the diff (I know, it's different than the Dana's) are pretty finicky.
