I just signed up for the basic residental service with Vonage (http://www.vonage.com). $14. 99 / month with 500 minutes anytime/anywhere calls. That works out to $0. 03 / minute for the calls, or another way of looking at it is 500 minutes of fee long distance for the price of local phone service. All the calling features are free too. They even offer email notification of voice mail, and will email a . wav file of the voice mail message to you. Other cool options are things like virtual phone numbers in different cities so that your friends and relatives call call you with a local call from a different city.

I am not selling this, but they do offer a referal program to their customers. We'll see how it works. :)

We have been using cell phone service for our only voice telephone service, but needed a wired telephone so that we can get Tivo with our DirecTV service, and this seemed to be the best way to go.

Almost 5 years ago my friend/neighbor (who is a CCIE) got a bunch of cisco wireless and VoIP equipment to test for his company, Shared Medical Systems (now Siemens Health Systems) I was probably the only 16 year old in the world with $10k+ worth of wireless and VoIP stuff on his desk, quite cool though. When we used the VoIP over cable it was quite clear and VERY impressive, not quite so well over wireless, but still worked. Probably could have worked the wireless thing out, but it's near 1000 ft to his house and we just managed to find a line through the trees to make a yagi antenna work.

just my experience with it, my (rather stupid) networking teacher wasn't impressed with the presentation/demonstration I did for the class, he just said "I can still hear the difference" but then again, he was teaching a CCNA class and didn't even have his cert. yet
