"It's also encouraging to me that "little guys" like RP have been able to get big enough to where they can get API certification. Why won't amsoil?"

The way I've had that explained in the past, is that when submitting for API certification, you MUST be using a stable and repeatable source for the various additives included in your base lubricant - but Amsoil has in the past stated that their supplies and suppliers CHANGE over time as they obtain "better" sources or quality components - which would mean they would then need to RE-certify for the change in final product...

Fact or BS? I dunno - but it DOES sorta indicate that at least in Amsoils case there probably WILL be random variations in final product to the end consumer. Will that be of any significance? Dunno - but for MY $$$, I sorta like to get REPEATABLE and KNOWN quality - not a moving target that is SUPPOSEDLY governed by a makers arbitrary decision and search for "best quality"!

I mean, if I go to McDonalds wanting a Big Mac, I really DON'T want to be served a Burger King Whopper, regardless of their specific perception of "quality" - or I woulda GONE there to begin with!

Justin,

If an unsophisticated consumer walks into Fred's Big Box emporium and picks up 11 quarts of Fred's Magical Mouse Milk, 15W-40 with the API CI-4 donut (or CI-4 Plus, if you will), then that consumer has at least some degree of confidence that the Mouse Milk will meet the minimum requirements for his/her new Dodge/Cummins. Without the API donut, who knows??????

Rusty

Again, can't argue with that.

Mouse milk? By the QUART??

I feel sorry for the lactating mouse hooked to the pump all day:D

Justin,

Mouse Milk - industry slang for magical elixir that will run under any conditions and cure all ills (see also Slick 50, STP, etc. )
