Has anyone read about the new API SJ Engine oil and about how it is not good for engines? It seems that in the quest for lower emissions the oil companies were forced to cut back the anti wear package in oils, thus earning a new rating SJ. I have done some reading and did find out that Zinc and/or phospates have been eliminated because they cause emissions when burned. This is no good for older, and in my opinion any engines. There dosen't seem to be any alternative since SH oils have been replaced by SJ oils.

Wayne,

I think you are one grade behind, as the newest API rating for Gasolene is SL. This was implemented in July of this year.

Wayne,

The API limit on phosphorus is that it be <1000 ppm in order to be API licensed. There is no limit on zinc as far as I know, but zinc levels in "SL" rated oils generally run in the 1000-1200 ppm range.

These limits only apply to 5w-20/0w-30/5w-30/10w-30 grade oils. These are the ones with the "starburst" and the words: "Certified For Gas Engines" on the front label.

Can you guys confirm as to weather anti wear packages have been compromised since SJ oils when compared to older specs? I'm concerned about my Gas engines not making the mileage in the long run. I had always thought new spec oils were always an improvment over old, but it seems as though we have reached a peak in lubricating qualties.

Wayne,

The standardized tests for the new API, "SL" (GF-3) classification are signficantly harder to pass. I don't think there is any issue with the newer stuff in terms of wear protection.

TwoSlick,

My oil analysis with 15,000 on the oil, HDD Amsoil 5W-30, which is also labeled as CH-4/SL showed 1244 PPM of Phosphorus and 1390 PPM of Zinc.

Amsoilman,

Oils intented primarily for diesel applciations (those starting with CH-4) are not subject to the API phosphorus limits. Check any diesel oil such as Rotella T or Delo 400 and you will see they have zinc/phosphorus levels comparable to those you posted ... .
