What kind of dog is this?

Heads up on lemon laws. It seems that here in Michigan you can have your appliance deemed a lemon is the same part breaks and has to be replaced 4 times within the same year. On our washing machine (Amana) the same part has been replaced 4 times in four years but this doesn't count. The belt keeps burning up filling the laundry room with smoke and smell. One of the parts that the belt goes around stops and the other keeps going till it wears through the belt. You can see this by the black soot at the bottom of the machine. Just a heads up on this subject.

What are you trying to wash that is heavy enough to burn belt? SOME black soot is normal. On that washer,(if its a top load) about 8 bath towels is considered a FULL load. (or else it burns belts) Is this a top load or front load washer?

Its a top load washer. As I said one of the parts locks up and the other keeps on going until it wears through the belt. After 4 replacements something is wrong. As my wife said to the service tech after 42 years of washing I think I know what I'm doing. We replaced the other machine only because the drum was rusting out. This new machine -high capacity /stainless steel drum was supposed to be better. Its only the wife and I at home, the kids are grown and gone.

Which one is locking up? (transmission, motor, mabe the water pump on that model) If the transmission locked up it is bad and probably seizing due to a bad seal. (causing rust) If its one of the ones with a water pump things (socks, thongs, small wash cloths ect. ) float due to overloading / and the float because they are small. They get inbetween basket and tub and they get sucked in when the pump goes into drain. Typical pumps are "impeller"like and will seize when foreign debris gets into it. When that seizes the transmission is still spinning wearing a hole in the belt. Im not making any accusations or anything thats just what i've seen in the past. BTW did they replace any other parts other than the belt?
