No, at weights between 10,000# and 26,000# you are commercial and must keep a log book, follow hours of service rules, stop at scales, have a driver physical, reflectors, fire extinguisher, commercial vehicle inspection sticker, $1 M liability, etc, but apportioned plates are not required.

HBarlow is correct... ... However you might be asked to purchase a trip permit for each state you travel through.....

Apportioned plates spread around you money based on your travel through those states... based on a per mile bases and the overall mileage you travel a year...

For us... it's less expensive to have apportioned plates on 1 of our smaller trucks than to pay the trip permit costs to travel through those states and Canada..... For example, a trip permit from ID to Edmonton Canada from Spokane WA requires a trip permit for ID, BC, and Alberta..... the apportioned plate and the record keeping over the year is more cost effective than the 24 trip permits... . 2 trips per month x 12 months...

Not all states require trip permits under 26K lbs... but some do... .

Hope this helps... .

nys dmv says I need apportion plates not because of weight but because of how many axels.

So I asked if I need aportion plates for my 1500 series pickup pulling my twin axel snowmobile trailer with my lawn mower inside to my house in new jersy and their answer was yes.

Jim, how much are the trip permits and how many miles per trip?

The only states I've had to buy them in are AZ and NM. NM is a flat rate per mile in the state and AZ goes by weight/mile. I suspect you could find the rates by googling their DOT websites.
