What oil filters are on the current DC approved list? The only list I can find is TSB 09-004-01 for diesel engines (dated May 18, 2001). I have a 2005 with the 5. 9L. It seems that if oil filters are a problem this "approved" list needs to be updated. :( I was not able to find an approved filter from this list in town so I ended up with a WIX 57620. What do you think? Did I goof up?

I've used the NAPA Gold (Wix) for 250,000 miles. I'd have to go through my records which are at the accountants right now, but that number sounds right. Does it have the fluted bottom for a filter socket?

Yes it does have the flutted bottom. I use a small cup that fits the flutes and a 3/8 ratchet with a 12 or 16 inch extension makes the filter change a POC from the bottom.

Yup, that's it! That's a good filter IMHO.

Here is a letter I received from the Filter Manufactures Council. You can decide from what this letter states if you want to use ANY filter not on a Ghostly list!

Consumer Purchases of Filters are sometimes told that an aftermarket brand of replacement filter cannot be used in the consumer's vehicle during the warranty period. The claim is made that use of an aftermarket brand will "VOID" the warranty, with the statement or implication that only the original equipment brand of filters may be used. This tends to cast doubt on the quality of the aftermarket filter.

That claim is simply not true. If the consumer asks for a statement in writing, they will not receive it. Nevertheless, the consumer may feel uneasy about using replacement filters that are not original equipment. With the large number consumers who prefer to use an aftermarket filter this misleading statement should be addressed.

Under the Federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the Clean Air Act and general principles of the U. S. Federal Trade Commission Act, a Manufacturer may not require the use of ANY brand of filter (or any other article) unless the Manufacturer provides the item free of charge under the terms of the warranty.

If the consumer is told that only the original equipment filter will not VOID the warranty, they should request that the OE filter be supplied free of charge. If they are charged for the filter, the Manufacturer may be violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act or other applicable law.

By providing this information to consumers, the members of the "Filter Manufacturers Council" (FMC) intend to combat the erroneous claim that the use of a brand of replacement filter other than original equipment will "Void the warranty. "

It should be noted the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is a U. S. federal law that applies to consumer products. The U. S. Federal Trade Commission has authority to enforce the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, including obtaining injunctions and orders containing affirmative relief. In addition, a consumer can bring suit under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

While I know this is completely true, you will probably spend more in costs fighting DC to get the warranty than it would cost to fix it... I have been down this road already (not on the MM act, but something similar).

With manufacturers throwing out the MM act as their "warranty" or a "selling point", they make it sound like this is something that scares the dealer, but it doesn't.

I have been using the Amsoil filters for about 7 years now on 5 different Cummins trucks myself.

Basically as long as you are using a quality filter you are safe. The problem was that a string of failed Fram filters caused some engine failures a few years back.

Just last year a buddy of mine lost a motor due to a Valvoline filter. I posted on it, do a search ... ..... Valvoline paid something like $23,000. 00 for lost down time, hotels, rentals etc ... ... ... ... . $12,000. 00 plus for the motor alone.

Well ****, I'm buying Valvoline filters from now on!! At least they stand behind their screw-ups.
