Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) noise?

Hi all,

I believe I may be having a problem with my throttle or accelerator pedal position sensor, and want to clean it or replace it. I have done several searches for APPS and TPS, and found tons of threads. Several threads say the sensor on the 24 valve engines is on the passengers side of the block, way down low, some threads say it is just above the starter and you have to remove the starter to get to it, and some other threads say it is inside the black plastic thing that bolts on directly above the VP44.

None of these threads was directly talking about the 2001 ETH motor if I remember correctly, they were usually about earlier 24 valve engines.

I finally broke down and ordered the service and diagnostic manuals yesterday, but I don't expect them to come in for several days yet. Can anyone tell me exactly where this darn sensor is on my engine??

By the way, the symptom/problem I am having is, I think, a fueling problem. When I mash the go pedal straight to the floor instantly, when the engine gets to around 2000 RPM I instantly loose all fueling, or at least it seems to be the fueling that is cutting out. If you raise you foot, the fueling comes right back. Or, if you leave your foot on the floor, after about 3 - 5 seconds the fueling also comes back to full power. If I just easily roll on the throttle, I can get to redline with no such defueling. So my current speculation is that when instantly going to the floor, the throttle position sensor gets confused and momentarily looses track of where the pedal is, and so the ECM/PCM/VP44/whatever decides to defuel until it figures out what is going on.

So far I have tried:

* Changed the fuel filter - no change

* Brand new Comp box from Edge - no change.

* Run original and new Comp on all main and sub-menu settings - no change

* Soldering the VP44 pump wire - no change

* Running with the Comp completely off, but still plugged in - no change

* Adding a pusher pump back by the tank. Now have 21+ PSI of fuel pressure, but this also didn't resolve the problem.

Thought it might also be a boost issue, so tried completely tying off the wastegate line. That seemed to help a little, as the engine would now rev to around 2500 RPM before defueling, but it still defueled.

I also have no codes set, no MIL lights on or any other symptom or indication of a problem.

Thanks,

Tom

I think it's under the black plastic cover, top front of engine drivers side. I had this cover off the other day and that's where the throttle cable connects to the arm. Can't help with the bigger picture. I have the manuals at home but won't be there for another 6hrs.

I saw this aome time ago referring to the actual sensor that is in the APPS:

Quote:

" I had very similar problems this past winter/spring. After reading some other posts, I go to Cummins and got the following part #: 4002066. Called; Sensor, Position (according to my receipt). Total cost: $36. 00+Tax (Your price may vary!)

It was on the port side of the engine towards the back and the bottom. Mine was a PITA to get out... ended up breaking it.

Seemed to fix the problem though.

Best of luck to you. "

Let me know if this helps.
