are 3/16"-24 & #10-24 screws the same?

title says it all. i have been using a bunch of snap toggler anchors [best out there imho for hollow wall but not cheap] that are labeled 3/16"-24. i have been using #10-24 in them and it seems to be good. i tried to find a 3/16" screw at work and the ones i found were identical to the #10's i have at work. the drill & tap poster i have on the wall show the drill size being different by 1 number [on the numerical drill size chart]



are the same?

metric bolts have a different angle of pitch. A 3/8 bolt is . 375 inch while the #10 is . 394 inch.

The chart that I could find shows the same as you have written, #25 drill for 10-24 and #26 drill for 3/16NS. (Note the 3/16" is labeled NS and not NC. ) Another chart I have shows the 10-24 to be . 190 major diameter. The 3/16" would be . 1875" so I it looks like there is a minor difference but if the 3/16" will go in the anchors you have then they should be fine. bg

I consulted my machinist hand book and the overall information of the 3/16-24 BSW (British Standard Whitworth) and the 10-24 UNC ( American unified coarse) are very close as listed above. The most important dimension is the pitch diameter. This is a line in the middle of the thread that is measured to determine if the thread is cut to size. Both of the threads mentioned have pitch diameters within the same . 005 of an inch range so should not have any interference issues and should be interchangeable almost all instances.

good. . i just wish the anchors were less money. . at $100 a case of 100 they are not cheap but they save so much time when i do my other job. i use to have to make sure i got studs or joists when i was hanging speakers or projectors or screens. now i just put it where it needs to be and don't worry about it. i've also now got the 1/4"-20 ones.

I use a crap load of those toggles at work. i get them from fastenal for about 75 bucks a box.

that's a good price. here in canada i don't get great prices as the cdn dollar is crap now. i like the 1/4" ones more now that i have used them. i trust the 1/4" screw more than the #10. and when i have about $50k retail in flat panels and projectors hanging from them i need to trust them

the answer is no 3/16 is . 1875 and 10 is . 190 not much differance but a little the system for numbers is base size . 060 + . 013 for every size , so 10 x . 013 plus . o60 = . 190 .

Nick, are those toggles for hanging stuff from ceilings only, or are they also for anchoring things to vertical walls through drywall?

I've been searching for a good drywall anchoring system for years.

any drywall surface. . they work good in concrete block if you get into the hollow area. they will work in plywood to so you can use a machine screw in them. i just use the small ones but they make them in up to 1/2" i think [5/16 & 3/8 for sure]
