Are all second generation chromed steel wheels (like those pictured on my 99) the same? I know the late 2nd gen's had aluminum wheels that were a little wider, but I'm looking at the chrome steel ones that were (I think) 6 1/2 inches wide.

Thanks,

-Vic

Your steel wheels are 63/4 inches wide by 16... The newer aluminum wheels are 7 3/4 inches wide by 16. They are advertised as 8 inchers but the door sticker says 7 3/4... . Hope this helps... . Pete

The wheels on your truck look like the wheels on my 1995 truck. My 2000 came with aluminum wheels.

Your local Dodge dealer should be able to answer this question. Or you could call Rickson. Those guys know wheels and tires.

I'm not sure on the wheels, but I went to price center caps for my 98 and there was 4 or 5 different chrome cap part numbers listed. There was no info as to what was different between them.

Maybe try a salvage yard that has Hollender (sp) Interchange manual/software. They will list what will fit by application not just by OEM part number.

sorry to be sarcastic but I can't resist.

The 2nd gen steel wheels come in two differnt types. Bent and soon to be bent. Don't four-wheel with them, they bend easy. 3 out of my 5 (counting the spare) are bent. The tires never balance right as a result.

Wish I had Aluminum. The aluminum wheels off of a 2000 won't fit on my 98. So there is some difference with the Aluminum wheels, not sure about the steel ones though.

Sean,

I don't think your comment about bent wheels is sarcastic. It's probably true.

Regarding newer aluminum wheels on older trucks. While my 2000 aluminum wheels will mount to the front axle of my 1995 truck, they will not mount on the rear brake drums. The drums are about 1/8" too big in diameter. I have heard of some drivers having this 1/8" turned off by a shop with a brake lathe.

That will probably get the wheels mounted. However... (You knew there had to be a "however" didn't you?) The backspacing on the newer wheels is greater than on the older ones. That is, the newer wheels will sit farther inboard than the older wheels. (They won't stick out to the side as far. ) I don't know whether or not this causes a problem with rubbing or anything else.

Also, I'm pretty sure that there is a difference between the lug nuts for aluminum wheels versus nuts for steel wheels.

Last, the hubcaps from an aluminum wheel will be loose if used with a steel wheel. The hubcaps from my 1995 (steel wheels) will not even mount with my 2000 aluminum wheels.
