I have a couple friend with Auto trucks (one 12V, two 24V), and have driven other 5 spd trucks, and it seems to me that the 5 spd ones are a lot noisier in the cab at highway speed. I was giving a ride to a friend last night (we had to drop his 24V auto off at the stealer), running around 75, and he confirmed that his truck is much quieter inside. Anyone else noticed this?

I can't say I've noticed this, but it would make some sense. The "hump" in a manual transmission truck is cut out to make room for the shifter, etc. and covered with a fairly thin rubber boot. The hump on an auto is completely closed, so would not transmit as much noise. At least that's my guess.

Maybe

Besides the missing sheet metal, carpet and insulation it could be the extra 10hp we get from the factory :D

Yes they are. I've owned both and driven both in several different configurations trying to convince myself I wasn't nuts. The manual transmission transmits more hard noise to the transmission crossmember to the chassis and throught the insufficient cab mounts and resonates in the cab. It's not really all that loud but it's at a frequency that's almost intolerable to some folks. Newer trucks are supposed to have better mounts to help with this. Take a mechanics stethescope and touch the crossmember and carrier bearing crossmember with the truck idling. You'll see what I mean. It seems to actually amplify the vibration noise of the motor. The console lets some noise in but it's the resonant noise that those of us with ears like a hound find tiring.

That makes sense, the direct coupling and all. It seems like its the motor noise that you hear, not gear noise. Some time ago I stuffed poly-fill between the inner and outer shifter boots, and it seemed to help a little. I guess once it warms up I'll try to figure something out. Too cold out now, plus I've got 3 weeks go get the other truck ready before we go to Moab.

As for the 10 hp, for the '97s, it was 35 extra. :D

I had a 98 12 valve auto and now the 01 HO 6 spd. I guess I am hard of hearing. I can't say that I have noticed a lot of difference.

I've never driven an auto but I can tell you my 5spd is noiseyyyy to say the least. When the weather gets warm I may try to quiet the thing down abit also.

Would have to disagree

My "99" auto trans was MUCH noiser in the cab than the "01" 6-speed. Was hard to carry a conversation with anyone in the 99, but the 01 I have no problem.
