I've got a new truck with 600 miles on it. I'm still varying my speeds between 45 and 60 mph on my 30 mile commute to work, but by the time I get to work the rear differential feels very hot to the touch. I know there is extra friction right now with the new gears, but my question is - how do I know if the temperature I feel on the pumpkin is too hot?

I have one of those infra-red thermometers, but I haven't used it yet because I wouldn't know for sure if my readings were good or bad. Has any one else taken these external temps or know what they should be?

Thanks for any advise!

I have measured mine with an infra-red thermometer when I have been towing my trailer and the readings have been in the low to mid 150*'s. Plenty warm to the touch but not overly hot at all. Sounds to me like you are okay.
