I have been researching log homes for the last five years and have found some good and bad points about them. The good points first: They are fairly easy to build, they are many floor plans types of logs and dealers out there, the cost is reasonable, and are usually pre built, you can get any type of wood, pine, cedar, and cypress. The size of the logs usually is the level of insulation and the look you are going for.
The bad: There are alot of wheeler and dealers out there. Some will push a home on you and have no idea what it takes for a good log home, green logs, bad cuts, settling, cracks, separation, lack of fit, ect. Maintenance on log homes is high, treating of the logs and rechinking coming way to often. And one of the worse things is the insurance companys (especially after rash of fires in the high country this last year) do not want to cover them. Of course they do not want to cover anything right now!
Werner aren't you in the buisness? I remember seeing some neat pics of log homes from Lativa. I am still looking at all options in new homes for my move to the mountains. In log, I am leaning towards
