I have read a couple of posts, the latest from DUBSTER that keep referring to a red cap on the gas tank. Is this for real or am I the latest sucker? I have never read a response to this mythical cap so now my curousity is piqued. My dad, like many of yours did I'm sure, took me snipe huntin' more than once. Left my brother and I out in the woods for hours before he would come out for us. Am I once again snipe hunting or what? #ad

Thanks (I think... )
Pat

Beleive it or not - there are cases of the red shipping cap being left on the fuel tank which causes low power & poor mileage due to fuel restriction - It also deforms the tank due to suction which causes a decrease in capacity.

Pat, if its there just look between the tank and the bed on top of the tank. If its there you will see it. Regards Pete

I have been known to pull a joke or two on someone. But usually it is on someone I know and can see there reaction. A word of caution if you see a HaHa after I write something then of course I am messing around.

Careful with your words there are folks that take offense to words like GAS Tank. HaHa ( I ain't figured out how to put the little smile guys on here)
Hope you enjoy this site, I learn something every day.

Hey guys. Just got back from a hunting trip in Utah. When I filled up the last time I removed the fuel cap and there was pressure in the fuel tank. This is the first time I have heard any air coming out of the tank. Is this normal or should I look at to see if the little red cap is on there. This is the first time this has happened in 1 1/2 years.

Thanks for the replies. Great info. I'm makin a list of stuff to look at when I pick the truck up on Friday. I'm glad I asked about it, otherwise I would have felt like Pee Wee Herman lookin for the basement in the Alamo. Till next time, take care fellas.

Pat

Big Barney - If you had the vent capped off then tank would not be under pressure but would have a vacuum so air would be drawn into the tank when opened instead of expelled.

Coasty - If it's a 4x4 you can get under the bed and shine a flashlight towards the top of the tank and see if it's there. Some people have said you can see the it from the rear fender well.

why??

This is about 3 foot off the ground. If you are coming off a LCU (Landing Craft Utility) and have to go through about 3 Foot of surf then yes I would agree with you and yes you would NEED A VENT HOSE.
Are your plans to make this truck into the " off road truck of the year" ?? Good luck pal. It may be true that the Cummins engine is unstoppible, but it weighs to much to compete with the Gasers. We are talking about two different kinds of power here.
torque vs horsepower or vice a versa.
good luck

I finaly looked on the fuel tank and I found the little red cap. That explains the one time that ran out of fuel on a road trip. I knew that there was at least 4 gallons left in the fuel tank as I coasted to the side of the road. I got out opened the filler cap and a big sucking sound was made. That suction must of collapsed the middle of the tank so that the fuel pump could no longer pickup fuel. I primed the pump started it right up and drove another 20 miles before filling the tank with only 30 gallons of fuel. I thought the problem was the suction side of the fuel pump but it was that my fuel tank had collapsed that much.
