Just finished building a receiver hitch on my Gooseneck so I had to check it out and make sure the plug worked. Not sure how well my cheap john "paper weight" controller will work with 4 axles. With the gain on 40 it did lock up the front axle on the back trailer in soft dirt, so maybe it will be ok.



Total length is about 69' with 45' of deck space, total tare weight is 15,500 lbs. My little Dodge looks small, I might have to use the Ford:-laf

Are you going to run that setup down thru Salt River Canyon?!?





If I had the need, I would, that is the route I always take when I haul to or from Phoenix. However, mostly I was just playing and used the second trailer for test purposes on my hitch hight and trailer plug. It took me about 10 minutes to back it up 100':D I do have a small 6'x10' dump and pickup bed trailer I might need and use. Mostly I installed the hitch for when I can really use it, like in the picture. That compressor was a major pain to load and get the ramps folded. The truck lost a rear axle ring and pinion.

I'm not sure why you would want to back the 2 trailers up? I had a friend that had hauled double 40' flatbed trailers, again I'm not sure why! He had to back both up once to get into a building for loading purposes. He pulled them far enough ahead to where they were aligned straight with each other, then he put chains from front trlr to back trlr on each side and and cinched them up real tight such that both trlrs pretty much stayed in line when he back up. Seems like a real process to me, wouldn't it be easier to back each trlr in separately? Anyway, that's was his solution.



BTW, I have other stories I could tell about this guy too. He was quite a character! I remember the time the cop came along as he was "raising the bridge"... .....

I came thru the canyon once with the RV, coming from Apache Jct headed for Chicago via Wolf Creek Pass. It was a fun trip, maybe too fun! When I got to Show Low and stopped to check things, my top heavy computer desk had fallen over. No damage, just had to set it upright again. I really liked looking down from the top on the south side and you can see the river crossing at the bottom which is about a mile below you. Amazing road though, 3 lanes wide (1 down-2 up) most of the way down on that side.

Did the ring and pinion just wear out or did it fail from jumping up and down in thwe sand??? bg
 
Like I said earlier, I was playing. I just backed it up for fun plus I needed to park it. It's hard for a 40 year veteran truck driver to turn the wheel opposite the normal way when you back up, almost impossible to make myself do it:) I have pulled small doubles and towbars quite a bit but rarely back up.



I am not quite sure why the pinion lost two teeth. You might be right about the bouncing in sand. They normally pull an 18' work trailer and use it hard. They were on the pavement when the teeth caught in the ring gear and pushed the bottom of the cover away from the housing and lost the oil. I am not sure exactly when the teeth broke, the driver wasn't sure.



I do think the pinion was a little shallow according to the pattern but the pinion and ring gear bearings were a little loose so maybe thats why. The pinion did not have any depth shims which is unusual. I started with 0. 40 which was too deep so I removed 0. 20 and ended up satisfied, also a 0. 08 backlash. Thats a hair on the loose side but I was sick of the dang thing by then:-laf For rebuilding purposes, give me a Ford 9 inch or 14 bolt Chevy any day. I don't have the special tools for the Dana's so it it very time consuming for me.

Nick[/QUOTE] I hear you on the rebuild, last one I did was a 92 Chevy that lost a couple of teeth. I replaced the ring gear and pinion and it did good for a year or so then one end of the carrier broke off, I guess it had been damaged when it ate the teeth before. bg

I am planning on hauling some hay out of Price, Utah and my original intent was to haul the '91 with this set up and haul about 10 ton back with both rigs. However it looks like in non-commercial duty, I am limited to 65' overall length in AZ and UT when pulling doubles. I guess I am going to have to double stack them :)
