Hello all,

I'm a new member who does not yet own a Dodge. I'll be getting one this summer probably from a friend of mine in Arizona who is having a lease expire on a 98. 5 quad cab cummins. My questions are;

1. Will I have any problems reregistering this vehicle in California, ie will it need a cat or a reflashing of computer, etc before they let me do it?

2. Will I have to pay the tax for the residual in Arizona and then pay the sales tax for the vehicle in California?

I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Shouldn't have any problems with emissions stuff when/if you register in CA. You will get hit for CA sales tax on the purchase price when you go to title/register it in CA. Couple of things you can do for the tax issue:

1. Tell the DMV you paid a much lower price than you did - if you go way too low the DMV employee may be smart enough to check blue book. I kinda doubt it though.

2. Title/register the truck in your name in AZ at your friends address if AZ doesn't charge sales tax. If you bring a vehicle that you own into CA after 90 days from the purchase sales tax is not due. Of course you could just leave the truck registered/titled in AZ until the next years fees are due.

Brian,

Thanks for the reply. Yea, the Arizona thing is a thought. Sounds like your talking about a dual residency thing with the Arizona address. Don't know how it would work. Will need to look into it.

My biggest concern is with the smog stuff as I wouldn't want to have to pay a bunch for retrofitting the car with a cat, etc. This would be money taken away from upgrades.

I wouldn't be so inclined to buy that one if I didn't know that it had lead an easy life except for the temperatures. Of course, as I live in southern Cal I could look at it like just getting broken in for the heat.

Hey Dennis,

I looked into buying a used out-of-state vehicle and bringing it into Cal awhile back. As long as the vehicle has more than 8000 miles it is considered "used" by the Ca DMV and you don't have to make it meet Cal smog requirements.

www.dmv.ca.gov and look under registration, lots of info (try not to fall asleep while reading it!)

Quote from DMV site:

"What should a California resident look for when buying a new vehicle from another state?

Individuals are prohibited from importing, purchasing, or leasing a new vehicle from another state, unless the vehicle was manufactured for sale in California, and the Environmental Protection Agency label certifies the vehicle has California smog equipment. California considers a new vehicle to be any vehicle with less than 7,500 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase. "

B2B,

Thanks, I'll check it out. He gets really good mileage with his truck. Low 20's with a quad cab 4X4 long bed. A known quality to work with. Now if I can just work it out where I don't pay a double tax.

It's pretty weird. I'm looking forward to getting a Cummins. Kind of like when I was in high school and had a 66 GTO. So many things you can do with it. Some of the things I've learned on TDR are very discourging though. A 4X4 with a 17 degree limit on downward angle. Please! And with no elegant solution. What were the engineers thinking! Still I've got the wife's approval and it's functional as I have a popup slide in camper and we love to camp.
