Well I got a powerstroke (430hp) daily driver that has more power than my toy cummins (338hp). I dont think that is allowed here. I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice on what my next step is on the road to 500 hp. Check my sig for mods, I know I need to advance my timing, stud it, and change turbo (thinking of calling J R Adkins heard he has some good ones), My question is do I keep the 160 there really isnt much else I can do to it other than LC DV but I have read here that guys are makin 500 hp on stock DV. Also what type of fuel system do you need to support 500hp. Thanks

The 160 pump will hurt you a little getting to 500. It would be easier with a different pump. A timing bump will help. Do you want to do it without drugs? A water/meth kit will help a great deal. Depending on what turbo you run and if you plan on using drugs you may be able to get there without studding it.

What is the difference between plungers and barrels, and delivery valves? What size are the stock plungers and barrels in a 160 pump?

You could go with laser cuts especially if you want more smoke. Also have the pump flowed on a pump stand at a good injection shop. Definately get the timing set and get a bigger turbo. 500 hp is probably possible.

Lazer cut dvs, set timming to 18. 5 degrees, custom cut plate, front rack plug and tweak rack travel. (just a little) ;) You should upgrade to a hybrid turbo or hx40/16 or you could push your turbo to the moon! :D Good luck! Let us know how it does... ... ... ... . Brad

Front rack plug and tweak rack travel, thanks Brad, where can one of these plugs be had and what is involved any good links in increasing rack travel. Thanks

Red stroke, Your 79 isnt by any chance the green one in the remus pull was it. It's good to find people this close that have the same disease. Turnin up diesels that is. I broke my fron't drive shaft about a week before the pull but I might have to enter next year.

My 160 with no major mods flowed 450 cc's with lazer cuts. Way more than enough for 500 hp. Call Jeff Garmon...

Thanks Morse, and yes that was the truck at the Remus pull, I put that pull on twice last year, and this year we are shooting for 4 pull, just a brush pull, but a good one.

I liked that pull alot. didn't have to have a corporate sponsor to perticipate. I would be interested in trying it next year. Do you run a diesel performance shop over there or is it just a hobby for ya. I might have to take a trip over to check it out.

Got a line on a little 55 from J R with the 14cm housing. Heard this is a nice turbo and can take some abuse, and handle sled pulling. Will this surge much and does the 55 have good driving manners. If I go with this turbo, I am going to need some more fuel. J R said $550 to get the 160 flowing 450 to 460cc ( can I post that?). Should I put in the LC DV or are my 191s ok. I am planning on about 18 degrees timing when the pump goes back on. I am probably going to stud the head, and put in the titanium retainers and hardend keepers, heard they start to crack with the 60 lb springs. Any suggestions.

J. R. is a great guy and builds great stuff!!! He built me a 913 pump that flows mega fuel. I had a 160 pump to begin with, and a stock turbo could clean its fuel up, and that was with 370s, 0 plate, and 191s. A good (no bleed-by) 160 pump with some of J. R. 's goodies can take you to over 500 HP. I would start with the 191s, timing to 18-21*, and a good turbo like the lil 55.

Good luck,

Jonathan

The absolute BEST thing I ever did on the way to 500 was to TRASH CAN the 160 pump. 215's are SO much easier to deal with. Yes you can get a bunch of fuel through a 160, but it'll never have the the helix, fill time, and governor assembly as a junkyard 215. Folks have been known to get way over 600 out of a 215 with NO change in DV's.

DRIVEABILITY is what you get with the 215.

The next BEST thing I did was hang a full 4-inch turbo (pick your poison) on there.

I suffered many moons with a 160. Never again. ;)
