AT drain plug

My buddies 727 auto has a homemade welded up drain plug in transmission fluid pan. A previous owner did this. It has a small bolt acting as the plug. Anyways, this seems like a good idea, except the problem is it LEAKS very bad. I want to know what can I use on or around this bolt to help stop the leak? Teflon tape, silicone? Thanks, Bill

Is there an o-ring on the small bolt? If not, try putting one on. You have to be careful though not to tighten it up too tight or it will just chew the o-ring up and leak as bad as if it was not there. I have a similiar setup in my pan and checked my ATF one day and noticed it was about a qt low. crawled under and found the entire underside of my truck coated with ATF. o-ring had torn and leaked like a sieve. Replaced the ring, finger tightened the bolt + 1/16 turn with a wrench and it hasn't leaked another drop.

B&M Racing makes an add-on drain plug - you can get it at any speed shop or from http://www.summitracing.com . That's always the first mod I make to any vehicle I buy with an automatic transmission.



I had to replace the hard nylon washer with a rubber one on the truck to stop it from leaking. I've never had a problem with the others so I probably just got a bad washer with this kit.

I use a 3/8 nut welded to the pan with a short (sawed off) bolt as a plug in all my vehicles. I have used both teflon tape and silicone to seal the threads. Both seem to work fine.



You might want to clean around the plug really well with carb or brake cleaner and make sure the leak is from the bolt and not from a pore in the weld. I have had that happen too!

Get out the brake fluid/shop air/cloth and triple check.

Hey, why pull an injection pump if it's only a leaking delivery valve holder?

Hey thanks alot guys. Yes it does have an o-ring on the bolt. He's been running this way for about a year and a half, back then when I service it for him it didnt leak with trans in park, only when there was pressure -drive, neutral. Good thing I get ATF cheap, cause he's been running me and his 727 dry. I'll clean it up real good, triple and quadruple check, get a new o-ring and try some t-tape on the threads of the bolt. Thanks Bill
