I was at the auto parts store today and was looking at the ATF+4 on the shelves and one of the brands had a Lic # printed on the container. I did a little research and found this information about ATF+4 suppliers. Apparently Chrysler uses this company to license and test the fluid to ensure it meets there standards.

AMSOIL is not on that list, but meets the spec. I use amsoil in my G-56. I wonder why Amsoil is not allowing themselves to be tested and placed on the approved list?

I was reading on someone's Amsoil site that a particular viscosity requirement of ATF+4 was 7. 2 (?) and the Amsoil universal ATF was only 6. 8. The gist of the article said the Amsoil product met the other specs but not that particular one. That could be the reason... .

There's good info on the developement of ATF+4 by Chrysler in 1989 at:

Chrysler transmission fluids: 7176, ATF+3, ATF+4

and the actual document submitted to the SAE about the development:

Nice documentation! I think if the ATF+4 is good for 100K, putting in synthetic is a waste of money. It will need to be changed due to contamination anyway. Synthetic cannot be any more slippery, or the clutches would burn up, so there is no advantage. The Chrysler ATF has the best viscosity stability cold to hot, of all ATF out there!

BTW, at Walmart now there is an ATF+4 Supertech for 2. 99 a quart. I'm sure it's made by the same guys that make the Mopar branded oil.

One more, all this talk about group 3 oils not being truly synthetic is non sense.

They are synthesized backwards than a group 4 oil, but they are synthesized nonetheless, and they use as prime materials, petroleum, rather than coal or natural gas, like other synthetics use.

Thank you for getting my point!
The ATF +4 standard is a Chrysler formula that is licensed to many. They have to adhere to the formula of lose their license. Bottom line is Wally World has the same stuff in it as everyone else.
