If i drop the trans pan, drain the fluid and adjust the bands .....is it ok to fill the trans with ATF+4 if i don't know the service history of the truck. It has only 63,000 miles on it and i have no record of the fluid used before or if it has ever been changed. It doesn't look like the pan was ever off....is there any way to tell for sure?

ATF+4 is what is specd for your transmission and I doubt it would last long off of anything else. Even if the previous owner ran AMSOIL ATF or something similar, there will be no harm in doing what your asking.

Here is a good write up on doing a fluid change and getting more fluid out of the transmission than simply dropping the pan.

Scroll down to the drivetrain section and click on the link that says "changing the automatic transmission fluid"

Just fill it back up with atf+4 of your choice. I've found I can get the mopar fluid for a very small premium over other brands. Also torque the pan bolts back to spec to prevent leaks.

FYI:

There's no need to pay extra for one particular brand of ATF+4 over another. Any licensed brand found on THIS LIST is the same and approved for use by Chrysler.

Is all ATF+4 synthetic? I just got what seems like a comparitively good deal on 20 Litres of Valvoline ATF+4 full synthetic for 5.99 a liter.....a good price here in Newfoundland. (Carquest). The filter and gasket were only 15 bucks.I am gonna do the rear return line flush process. How many liters (or quarts) of flold fluid will remain in the mix when i do this process.

ATF+4 is a group 3 fluid. Not a full synthetic but a blend. The group 3 and 4 oils are lumped together as synthetic.

Thanks Cerb
. Since i have been on here i have read hundreds of threads and replies and i value your responses. So it is OK to use this Valvoline .....it throws me off that it says Full Synthetic on the bottle....thought i had read here somewhere that synthetic wasn't necessary....i am a bit confused and i dont want to load the stock trans with anything that will destroy it in short order. Like i said ,i am going to do the rear return line flush process and want to get as much out as possible
Maybe tomorrow cause we have a honkin snowstorm coming today here in Newfoundland

ATF+4 is ATF+4 no matter who makes it or what it says on the bottle. If it says ATF+4 it is compatible whether it says full synthetic or group 3. Just do a fluid exchnage and you should be good.
