I was told the dealer wants to replace the power steering fluid with ATF 4 to attempt to fix weak / no power steering assist.

Anyone else try this?

I filled mine up with Amsoil ATF-4 about 2500 miles ago - and no problems so far. But I didn't have any problems with it before - just an empty resevoir after moving the pump to a new engine.

Filled mine with Amsoil ATF-4 also, after removing old fluid with wife's turkey baister. (heh, heh) She never could find it at Thanksgiving. Just kept my mouth shut, then she asked me if I had seen it. I pleaded the "fifth" amendment. ATF-4 worked just fine in mine.

I just went to Valvoline Syn Power in mine also it was foaming over. I sucked it out. three times now it steers better that it ever has and i cant feel a shutter when I step on the breaks when its cold. (-10)

ATF for power steering

I would go with what your owners manual says, I have a 2001 and it calls for power steering fluid and it says specifically not to use ATF. Some stealers are always thinking new and the 2002-2003 have ATF in there power steeering systems. Not to mention the cost of ATF+4 @ $15. 00 a quart, :--) This way you will still have some of your warranty intact.

Just my 2 pennies. .

david;)

I just pit Valvoline synpower in mine, with 72K on it the original PS fluid was about as dark as Rotella with 5K on it,yuk,I sucked it out with a turkey baster, ran it for 20 minutes, flushed it again,Much cleaner this time, and filled it again, now its clear like new. I didnt notice any difference in power steering effort,or braking performance. I really need a little more asssit with my plow on the truck,Im getting fore arms like Popeye turning this truck.
