I purchased two gallons of Mopar ATF+4 from a local dealer. Both gallons were factory sealed. On opening, both smelled like something died in the container. Is this the "normal" smell?

I just checked the quart size bottles I have. And yes it smells like something died in it. I guess thats why ATF-4 cost so much the additive to make it smell bad. :-laf

Thanks for the reply; I was wondering if I got a bad batch and needed to change it again! It sure is expensive, and I wasn't looking forward to buying more so soon.

there was a recent post that wal-mart is carrying mopar atf+4 for 4. 50 ish a quart ...

dealers around here are selling it for 5 something a quart

I dropped the pan the other day on mine and it has amsoil ATF and it reeked. Smelled like something is spoiled. Once it aired out it smelt like ATF, still bright red. Now in the past few weeks I have gotten my transmission in the 215 range, so I wander if this has something to do with it.

It is labelled Mopar, P/N 05013458AA. Cost about $36 a gallon plus tax.

:--) Sounds like that liquid gold! Sheesh! Thats more than Amsoil costs. Thats insane!!

Yeah, That stuff stinks too. I have yet to meet a gear lube that don't stink.

Since first adding the stinky stuff it seemed like I could vaguely smell it after driving a few miles and then stopping. Trans temp gauge would typically be in the 150-160 range.

Yesterday I pulled a trailer weighing approx 9,000# for about forty miles at 55 mph, several miles of it being up a 6% grade. The truck ran fine, trans stayed in fourth, TC stayed locked, trans temp went up to 190 (probe in side of Mag-Hytec pan). I could smell the fluid while driving, and when I stopped the smell was very strong. It's not a "burned" fluid smell, just a horrible odor!

Prior to changing the fluid I never smelled anything, and pulled some loads long distances, up steep grades. Whatever came in the transmission sure didn't smell like the "fresh" stuff I have in it now!

Any thoughts?

Mopar ATF+4 sold in the mopar jugs here at wal-mart for $4. 42 per quart and no it does not have an offensive smell.

I've been buying +4 for under $20 per gallon at dealer for years. Has the price just jumped up? I do have a commercial account.
