This will be the 1st of many posts from a long time lurker needing to tap the tdr wisdom! I'm having the auto trans in my 97 2500 serviced a week from today (also a rear seal replacement). The independent, but well recommended, shop tells me they will use a type 7176 atf they get in 55 gal barrels from Texaco.

Do I need the +3 or +4 rating in addition to 7176, or does the # 7176 imply at least +3 rating?

Thanks for any help!

7176 is ATF+3 and is the recomended fluid for all Dodge auto trannies except those that use ATF+4. Yours uses +3. I do know that +3 and +4 cannot be mixed with each other. As far as I know Amsoil has the only +4 rated fluid outside of the dealers. Hope this helps.

The Amsiol is currently OK to use in all Dodge transmissions. +3, +4, also Dextron, Mercron and more that I don't care about.

You don't want to use anything not rated as 7176. The +4 just recently has been ok'd by Chrysler in +3 trannys but it's more money. +3 has enough anti-foam additive for Mopar trannys Dexron does not have it, that's why GM dealers have an anti-foam additive. +4 has even more anti-foam, you can tell if someone is running +4 real easily, it smells very strong like gearlube.

I hope some one like Bill K. can give us definite word, but when I had my transmission rebuilt about 20,000 miles ago, the shop told me that they use Dexron in the trannies unless the customer specifically asks for 7176 (And I didn't know that until I already had moved out of the state).
With the exception of recently having the plastic clips on my transmission line break, I haven't noticed any problems.
When I get the replacement lines and fittings from the dealer I plan to put 7176 in it though.
