ATS Commander,...how to

I just purchased the ATS Commander. Needing someone who has this unit to provide a little feedback on how and when you use this unit (under what circumstances) and at what levels do you set it for the following: daily driving, street racing, towing heavy????? Have you noticed any negatives using this unit? Under what conditions? If you have a built transmission, will this unit suffice as a light duty inertia-type brake (downhill mountain terrain with heavy load behind you)?? In reading the propaganda that comes with the unit, it would appear that you should be able to descend down a considerable grade with say 15k lbs behind and pushing you and you have it locked into the TOW mode and you shouldn't exceed say 50mph. Is that correct?? Tks for the help.

I have one installed as part of my Stage V transmission. I have it set to lock on the middle setting, which causes lock-up around 37MPH, and (more importantly) unlocks from 4th gear right at 750RPM. To tell you the truth, I never mess with the settings (except for dyno runs - then I set it to lock ASAP). Yes, it helps considerably with engine braking, but holding back 15K might be asking too much... that's better suited to an exhaust brake (along with the Commander, so that the transmission stays locked up).

I have one that is set to lock up at 37 mph, sometimes it does, sometimes when I'm in hard acceleration it locks up late. Doesn't unlock until 30 mph.

The biggest complaint I have is that it doesn't downshift form overdrive to drive and will lug the engine if I don't turn off OD. It really sucks having to turn OD on and off all the time. But, with my minor performance mods, I'm told it is needed. I am just dealing with it, but not happy about it.

Can you use the commander on the stock or any aftermarket transmission? Or will it only work with ATS trans?

The instruction with the Commander indicates that at a minimum you need to use it with the ATS VB. Won't work properly otherwise. I wouldn't stop there as that TC is sweet.
