ATS Manifold Question

A question for the forum please. The ATS 3 piece manifold that is currently being used and enjoyed by many members of the forum looks to be a very fine addition to my bombing activities.



Has anyone done or know of a definitive test where someone installed it for a mileage gain If so, what were the numbers that were seen. This would be with a stock 3" exhaust and exhaust brake on an 2001 H. O. engine.



Mine will be here and installed this Friday and I am curious what to expect.



The wife is getting flowers with a note to smooth over my conscience.

I didn't notice any mileage gains. It did help a little bit with spoolup. But, the reason I got it was to eliminate the shrinkage and gasket creeping with the stock manifold, which has worked out very well.

The problem with the cracking of the manifold and gasket were a driving force behind my reasoning. I was just curious if anybody had seen a mileage gain.

I put them on both my 96 and then again on my 01' HO, and didn't see any mileage gains at all. I would doubt that anyone has seen any improvements in mileage worth noting- but your driving force reasons for getting it are exacly why I did too, so don't let a lack of mileage improvements stop you.

Mileage is not the concern, dependability is the overall driving factor with me. All the mods that have been done so far, are for dependability and longevity of operations. I have just turned over 99,000 with no engine issues. I still have my stock turbo and lift pump with no issues, nor have I ever set a code in the computer, which is absolutely amazing to me, considering that I have put the truck under some stress during moments of child hood fun. The truck develops just under 400 hp with a very decent 22 mpg if I keep my foot out of it. I have loads of power for my driving style. My concern now is to carefully tweak up the dependability/reliability factor without hurting the mileage factor. I have gotten 24 mpg in the past on a straight and level run of 200 miles and 22. 8 over 715 miles of travel from Portland, Oregon to Salmon, Idaho through the Columbia Gorge to Spokane and over the mountains passes of Idaho and Montana. My goal now is to routinely break the 24 mpg barrier. I think I can do it with very selective upgrades. At 65 mph with 7,000 lbs of trailer I will average 18. 8 mpg. That is from Portland to Provo, Utah and back on a routine basis. This truck is my preferred daily driver and though DC would like me to trade it in for a "New One", this one is paid off and I just truly enjoy the truck and its comfort level. And besides, every now and then I require a few drugs to keep me happy. You know the kind, SMOKIN FURDS & CHUBBYS. Oo.

Those are some pretty sweet mileage numbers . Wish I could get there, but the 4:10's and my 13+ foot fifth wheel (AKA the brick wall) don't afford me any help. :{



But, I'm with you- very pleased with the truck.

The ATS manifold is the fix for DC's cheap ways. I drive a Big rig for a living and it has a N-14 Cummins anyway, I looked one time at the exhaust and it has the same type of manifold as the 3 piece ATS.



Which goes to show how cheap DC can be in making and specing vehicles.



The new Ram with that quieter cummins still has a 1 piece. ATS has made a 2 piece for that model which is better than stock... .



These engine heads need to be able to expand under heat stress and the ATS 3-piece enable it to do that. Just remember that when you install the manifold, run it a bit like a tank or 2 and then retorque the bolts. Otherwise they will loosen up and fall out. Lost 2 bolts on mine and the others were loose

Good advice. Any special prep for the bolts, (anti-seize) or type stuff??

When I had one on my 2001 I thought it made the exhaust tone deeper and less raspy on my 5" system. It was also more responsive at light throttle a slightly improved spoolup.
