ATS vs. DTT Torque Converter

I am getting real close to purchasing a TC and have narrowed it down to the ATS TripleLOK, and the DTT STORM TC.



People who have owned both or have first hand experience with both:

1. What did you like about one better than the other?

2. Which seems to be a better value?

3. And if you were to build a (or in some cases, another) high HP truck... Which would you purchase?

I'm sure some people have used both, but do not think many have. I think people pick one and find it works great for them, and will go to the grave saying what they have is best without first hand experience with the other. :-laf

As a vendor I have had some limited experience with both, and I can honestly say both products are excellent. I honestly think you will be pleased no matter which one you choose. The best advice I can give you is call both companys and talk to them, and buy from the company you feel most comfortable with.

Ride in trucks equipped both ways, with power similar to what you want to end up with. If you are planning power upgrades, talk to your power vendor on what they would suggest. If they sell the power, they likely have tried to put it to the ground.

CJ, I should'nt be answering cause of your big red letters, but I will answer #3, and since this is not a transmission thred, I don't think it goes against the guidlines. I know ATS will build you a High Stall Triple Lok if you want to go the route of making big HP with BIG turbos. Drop me a line if you decide to go that route. Good luck on your quest to HAVE FUN.

I would look at the trucks that fit the application that you are wanting your truck to due. If making big power and are going to due major boost lunches the most important thing will the the shafts you choose. As most big power trucks have found that 300m shafts just weren't enough, Intelligent Engineering/OPIE shafts have become necessary.



Another thing that I would look at is what you consider big HP, some think 500hp is big, others think that 800hp is big.



If you are looking at DTT you could contact some of our guys that make big power on this site. Try, IdahoCTD, OPIE, Propuller, Snowman, Trevor Wood(he has run both transmission you are asking about), Keith at DD, JetPilot, CSutton7, Ted Kobi, Andy Sebek, Floor It, Lenny at Dynomite,huff and puff, and if you are a member of the DTR, try Timinva he has tried and installed all brands, and makes 630+hp on Diesel.



Before all the DTT customers that make big power lynch me for not being on this list, I used these names because know that they are all at least 600hp 24valves on diesel and 700+hp on NOS. And in JetPilot case 885hp. That way he can get an idea of what trucks running DTT transmission use to harness all the power they got.

I've had first hand experience with both units. Both are top notch, and don't hold anything back... . PERIOD. My dads truck has an ATS trans in it. Shifts right on the spot each and every time, TC locks up and feels great, but is still stock. I've driven a truck equpped with a DTT trans many times. Empty, pulling a load you name it. This truck was also putting out 400 horses give or take. Both are identical trucks except the DTT truck is a LB, and dads is a SB.



No matter how i drive each truck, they both are flawless at every aspect of driving, racing, pulling, you name it.



The only thing i've noticed between the 2 trucks is the DTT seems to accell from a stop quicker. The accelleration is hard to describe, but it just seems like it has a lower stall than the ATS. The DTT has an 89% TQ, and i'm not sure what ATS is.



Being both trucks are totally different (HP factor) it's hard to tell wich one shines the brightest.



My personal opinion. A DTT trans will be going in my truck, when the stocker pukes. The simple fact of the matter is i've see the internals of a stock trans, and a DTT. The closest i've come with internals of an ATS is pulling the pan off and doing the adjustments, and fluid changes.

For me, what matters most is knowing the person that is building my transmission.

1. is this rebuilder a "good enough for who it's for" type of person ?? Who knew when i ordered dads. With DTT i know who's touching my truck, and trans.



I'm by far affiliated with anyone, i'm just another mechanic that will only trust certain people to touch my vehicles. Nor am i trying or wanting to bash any certain person or company. Just adding my 2 cents to help in any way possible.

I have decided to go with a DTT TC (%?), DTT VB (Hot-Rod series), and the ATS TripleLok Commander.



Oh and a nice MAG-HYTEC Double Deep pan

better make sure that Commander is compatible with the DTT Valve Body. I know the DTT Valve body was designed to work with their smart controller

Hot Rod VB will make you go like this Oo. if you like positive shifts. Their controller will work with our VB but most people running our TC's don't spend alot of money on a lock-up controller unless it's for exhaust braking. Our TC's don't work like others where there is a big surge of power when lock-up comes in, when my truck locked-up I could barely tell because the fluid coupling was so strong that the power was already there. For most that are racing they just just a $5 toggle switch.

I am still leaning toward the DTT TC but have concerns about the hot rod VB... .



If I am doing this Oo. I can only imagine what kind of hell my STOCK input and output shafts must be going through!

I wouldn't run anything except ATS in my trucks regardless of HP. The masters of lock up, that's for sure!

Cummins Thunder, if you are planning to do any racing, you will want the shafts. As far as your leaning towards DTT for the TC, you won't be sorry for that decision. Their fluid coupling is awesome, and their lockup gets the job done, too.



The 2 approaches are very dissimilar, but if you want the best of both, you can't go wrong with your choice of DTT. I'd include their VB with the package. Like Stephan said, the controller is not required with their components, unless your wanting an exhaust brake down the road.
