The gear case is not painted and the data plates are glued on, instead of rivited, so I'm assuming the gear case has already been replaced for some reason - KDP maybe??
I pulled the front cover off the gear case and found something interesting (wish I had a digital camera but don't so I'll attempt to explain).
The surface area where the dowel pin is, is raised about 3/16 of an inch or so from the surface area where the bolt is. The front end of the dowel pin hole has a raised edge, making the hole a few thousands of an inch smaller in diameter and the dowel pin is recessed into the hole about 1/4". This means there is no way that the dowel pin could come out. It was fully seated. In the inside of the timing case cover appeared to be a date coded, 11 99.
Is this gear case one from a later model engine or is this a "new and improved" version for the 12 valvers??
Also noticed that the instructions on the service manual and from some areas on this site state to install the front seal from the outside - that is almost impossible. It also states to remove the belt tensioner - don't need to, but you do need to remove the fan hub bracket... . oh well. .
Can anyone tell me why the difference in my gear case??
Thanks!
