Using illflem's air method, what COULD pop if there is too much pressure?

We heard a pop instantly as the air hit it, and never could get it to blow air out the drilled hole. No oil leaks, and cannot see where the heck it popped. Can't feel any air blowing either.
I'm thinking the dipstick tube somewhere, although it is firmly attached to the engine still.
Any thoughts?

Did you loosen/remove the filler cap? If not did you blow the breather tube off? If you pressurized the system too much you could have popped a seal out. Check that the dipstick tube is still attached to the engine (near the starter). Did you split a tube? Dipstick or vent.

Good luck. There are not a lot of places for air to escape.


P. S. If the air is still get a cigarette and see if you can find where the smoke moves... . use caution!

Got me Gene. I had no troubles and haven't heard of others. The air valve with my kit has a gauge, with a 3/8" air hose at full flow the pressure only hit 5 psi, the blowby lets most out. I've heard there is an o-ring that seals the bottom of the dipstick tube,but have never seen it. It seems if the 0-ring blew out you'd still get plenty of air a long as the tube is still attached to the engine. Best advice is to follow the sound of the air. Maybe it was the air compressor that popped.

I had my hand over the oil fill tube. Breather and dipstick tubes still attached. What seals are you talking about possibly having popped? Blowing air into the dipstick tube causes a mist to rise up in the area of the injection pump. I'm baffled.

Actually sounds like the tappet cover under (behind) the intake and injection pump. The gasket could have made a pop sound as it slipped out.

If you had the breather tube blocked my bet is that it cracked in the hard to see area behind the injection pump.

I found the leak. It's the Push Rod Cover Gasket. Is there any way to get at this gasket without removing the injection pump? Waaaahhhhhh!!!!!

radixr, I know the pushrod (tappet) cover can be replaced on a 24V without taking the injecion pump off. I think it would be a major PITA, but should still be able to do it on a 12V without taking the injection pump off. I hope you are not a big guy, and being a contortionist would certainly help.
