Cummins Conversion Freaks post here!

The new forum is here!

I just replaced my 1985 rear axle and NP205 drive shaft yokes so that I now can run the CORRECT U-Joints/drive shafts for the Cummins. I found that my 1985 size spicer u-joints are FRIED after only 7 months of running behind a Cummins! So keep in mind that running the smalll u-joints should only be temporary fix untill you replace them with the large ones if you intend to mash the petal every once in a while ;).

These yokes BOLT on to the 1985 Dana 60 rear axle and the 1985 NP205 transfer case with any modifications !

SPICER Part Numbers as follows (sorry I forget which is which).

SPD 3-4-10951-1 YOKE $59. 09

SPD 3-4-5711-1X YOKE $130. 00

SPD 3-70-28X Strap & Bolt Kits $5. 27 each

I got to give Mike at Valley Truck Parts a BIG thumbs UP. :) He really went out of his way measuring the old yokes with a micrometer, and then went looking through a bunch of manuals for about 20 minutes to find the correct yokes. And would you believe they had them IN STOCK ! They mainly work on the big rigs, but treated me like my truck was the only one on the road. Boy couldn’t Banks learn a thing or two from them. Valley Truck Parts is now rebuilding my drive shaft from my 1991 donor truck and should be ready tomorrow. Valley Truck parts phone number is 800-783-8300, and is located in Grand Rapids, Traverse City, St Joseph, Detroit, Gaylord, MI.

Hope you guys find this helpful

Kyle

Thanks, Crewcab.

TOO BAD WE DON"T HAVE A FORUM TO STORE THIS INFO IN!!!

Do you happen to know if that yoke will fit on the front Dana 60 diff? I already have the right stuff in the rear, but will need to replace the front yoke eventually, probably about the time I shatter it, if all holds true to my past history... :D

BTW, did you get my e-mail about the intercooler? I messed up, it was 127. 50 current, and still is. Call me if you didn't get it, I will give ya the details. 505-362-8333 Thanks again bud. James

Hutchew, The rig & pinon are the same front and rear dana 60, so I would assume that the yokes are the same too. I am hoping to go aftermarket for a intercooler and am checking out a lead OTHER THAN BANKS !

Hope this info helps

The front U-Joint is not the big 1310 series unit the rear axle (Dana 70) uses.

I think it is the 7260 series-same as the gas engine rear joints.

The reason the front u-joint is smaller is that the front axle is not meant to take the full engine torque by itself like the rear axle does.

I got my new drive shaft on today and boy what a difference, less noise and no drive line vibrations:D . On the down side I also got the bill, using my 91 donor drive shaft for parts and replacing ALL U-Joints/Carrier Bearing, and replacing the back section drive shaft tube, $394  . I don't know to laugh or cry.

I haven't got that far yet..but....

I feel for ya, Kyle. Every time I turn around, this project of mine is costing more money. My wife is ready to divorce :D
