I've been planning on getting a medium sized "sport utility trailer" for quite awhile but a recent comment by a trailer salesmen has soured my wife on the idea. He told her that SU trailers get infused with gasoline/oil/dirt smells from carrying the bikes and quads around and that it will never go away. (Even when the bikes are not inside). Now she wants a regular travel trailer, but how am I gonna be able to live civilized at the dunes???

How much of a problem is this really? I'm sure theres some smell associated with carting around dirty dirt bikes, but is it really that big a deal??

if you spell gas, they will stink.

I used to store my dirt bike in the house. Everytime you get ready to park a dirtbike or ATV, turn off the gas, and be sure you run the carb dry. This stops the gas in the bowl from splashing out, or worse yet the needle sticking and gas pooring out. once the bike has cooled down, but a plug in the gas tank vent and the exhaust system. Never had any smells from the dirt bike. I still always run it out of gas, the stream of fresh fuel when you first turn the petcock on helps to flush out the needle and seat.

Oh ya, wash it first before putting it in the RV :). If you get one with a built in fueling system, the gas smell from the cans will be kept outside as well.

Mine usually had the smell of fuel in it after arriving. After unloading and leaving the rear ramp open for a little while, all was good. My wife never complained.

some or maybe most toyhaulers share the living space with cargo space, not sure what type you are looking at, mine for example has a wall and door separating the two , if I was to leave the door between the twpparts open , yes you would notice the smell ,when closed it is never an issue

I haul one or two motorcycles in my Tailgator and after 20,000 miles have never notices a fuel smell. I suppose it depends on the fuel shut off device.

I occasionally haul a couple of minibikes inside my 5th-wheel - not a toy hauler. No smell problem if they don't leak. Oh yeah, my wife refused to get a toy hauler because of the smell - Doh!

I run U4 in my YFZ and the wife complains the way the toyhauler smells when she first gets in it but as other have said it goes away after about 30 min.

(I have a fantasic fan)

My friend hauls a quad and a PWC in his. No smell. Biggest problem is there's no room to do anything unless he unloads first. Not a big deal if you're going somewhere to stay for a few days, but inconvenient in route (he can't get to the bathroom) and if you're only staying overnight on your way to somewhere else. Plus side is you can hold a dance in there when all the toys are out! Oo.

Between the 3/4 quads. No Smell in ours when we get to our camp site. We don't store the quads in the trailer. They get unloaded and into the garage.

Our trailer doesn't have a problem at all but I always turn off the fuel and run it out of the carbs on our quads before I load them. It has a common cargo area (no divider) but everything in the main part of the trailer is made out of materials that won't absorb smell. The couches are synthetic leather and the only carpet is in the bedroom in the fifth wheel part. I guess the mattress on the drop down bed could but it hasn't.

I have owned two toy haulers and have traveled darn near coast to coast with both, with at least two quads at all times and have never had a problem. Just make sure I don't over fill the tanks and secure the fuel shut off valve and life is good.

Had a 5th toyhauler for almost 3 years now, store the toys in it over the winter, still has that "new RV smell". Never had a fuel odor. I do not go to any special trouble, although I do keep up on the maintenance, so there are no leaks. I do not have the wall, toy storage is in the main room.

Gifford,

Don't know what you have for a tow rig but I have a 36' Toyhauler that has a 12' garage that is separate from the living area. This keeps the living area smell free.

I have a 29' fifth wheel with the seperate garage. The only time I've noticed any fuel smell was when my nephew put his old MR50 Honda in it and it was leaking like a sieve. With the usual TTR-125 and DRZ-400 with no fuel or oil leaks I've never noticed any smells, but usually leave the vents cracked in the garage area.

I had a race SV650 with open velocity stacks that used VP U4 and that thing would clear your sinuses in a hurry, even in the home garage I had vapor issues. I sold that before getting the toyhauler though.

We decided on the seperate wall so we could have a definative living area, and not have to worry about unloading before we could utilize the space. We have whitewater kayaks and dirt bikes, it's nice being able to use the garage to change in and hang up the wet or muddy clothes without crudding up the living area.

This is not true. I haul in a Toy Hauler (53') with a living RV quarters and have never had a problem, unless you spill fuel, I suggest a diamon plate floor so you can clean up easily

What part of the country are you in? I have lots of dealers I have worked with.

I have a Patio Hauler - similar to Eric's Raptor - with a separate garage - NO smells. My friends with WW trailers - no walls - haven't had any problems with gas odors and they don't do anything but turn off the fuel petcock.
