Hey Vendors!!

Better Late Than Never

I have a 1986 Honda Fourtrax 125 fourwheeler I bought for my son about four years ago when he was 10. I have noticed that while in 4 gear (top gear) it has a clicking noise, almost as if it was hung between gears the best I can describe it. It seems to shift into and run fine in that gear, but has the clicking noise.

The machine has seen more garage time than riding time since we live in town anyway. My son now usually wants to just ride my Honda Rancher now since its a bigger machine and he's older. Any way I have been debating on just fixing it up with a couple new front tires, battery, and maybe a tune-up and keeping it around.

My thinking is something is just out of adjustment and not broken with the transmission part of it. Any thoughts what would be causing the clicking noise. It's only clicking in fourth gear (top gear).

I've never heard a clutch tick. Especially on a Honda with low hours, those clutches are tough. I'd look to a simpler explanation like chain/sprokets.

I agree w/SRadke. Check to see if the chain is too loose or if the one of the two sprockets are worn out or bent. The sprockets, when they wear out, will allow the chain to jump the teeth. This will cause a clicking sound.

Also check to see if all you motor mounts are tight and not broke. This will cause the chain alignment to be off when under a load.

I had a 87 250x that had a gear (third) go out. If you shifted into it, it would click.

Thanks guys for the info so far. I'll take a look at the chain, sprocket, and check it out the motor mounts. It has a guard or shield completely covering the chain and sprocket. Also I got a 85 year model 125 when I bought the 86, the guy threw it in for parts. :D

Like Jeff I thought it might have something to do with the clutch, hopefully just out of adjustment causing the clicking noise.

By the way Jeff I seen some pics of your truck since you installed the lift,it looks good. Heck I'm missing out not making any of the monthly meetings lately. :-laf

I haven't been either. The past few Saturdays I've had other things going. Last Saturday I was just lazy. Lets go riding sometime. I just bought my wife a quad so she's wanting to get out and ride.

Sounds good, we may have to try it out sometime. :)

i don't know if the're the same basic design or not, but i had an '88 TRX 200 SX, and that had a centrifugal clutch on it that was virtually indestructable. I beat the he** out of that bike and it ran great til i wore out the top end. as far as your clicking sound, as was previously said check the chain out, see how badly worn it is, if the rollers are worn out, or if the chain is dry (in need of oiling) it can click
