This kind of stuff is great for the non-diesel crowd. They see that and think "wow! diesels have really changed" And then they see and HEAR trucks like mine and well... I went to a Sonic drive in for lunch today, and what noise do I hear for the 20 minutes I am there? A 7. 3 chattering away. Jerk orders his food, and then sits there and eats, all while letting that noisy sucker clatter away #@$%!

This is the peak time for business (12:00pm) and people are having to shout over this thing to order. All this really ticked me off. It was no 24 valve, but it was still noisy.

Big deal! I saw Hot Rod Magazine do that nearly 20 years ago with a top fueler and an F16. The dragster won that one too. It's just the fact that applying torque to the ground is a lot more efficient at accelerating a vehicle (which weighs a lot less BTW) than hot gasses flow out of the aft end. It's all just publicity. Cool car nontheless.

There was an article years ago in C&D or R&T about a top fueler and a Corvette. They accelerated the Corvette to top speed and when it crossed the start line, the Fueler went. Beat the Corvette by quite a bit. Just to show how fast they accelerate.

If this is the one I remember reading in National Dragster...

It was Don "Big Daddy" Garlits. He had always been a Navy fan and finally was able to talk someone in the higher ranks to a heads-up race.



He took his "swamp rat", I forget which one - it was the late 80's, out to Miramar to race an F-18.



The F-18 was launched from a catapult used for training.

It took Garlits a few attempts until he was finally able to get traction on the 'virgin' concrete.

Once he was able to get the rubber to hook up he proved the dragster was 'quicker' than the Hornet.

However, the Hornet was airborn after some 2. 5 seconds or so and all bets were off at that point...

But, the zero-330 ft times were impressive.

That sounds right. I was thinking that it might be Big Daddy. Of course, 20 years ago I was 8 years old, so memory doesn't serve very well. I knew I could count on someone at the TDR to fill in the gaps though.
