Are there other people here that are like me and find that auto-dim rearview totaly annoying when it's not needed?

I love the look of a tinted window. But I can not stand having to drive and look though them. Totaly limits visability. So tinting the windows is out

So, my question is. How did you guys go about "fixing" this problem. The fact that DC didn't do an obvious "on/off/auto" switch is stupid. Short of cutting into one of the wires to that rearview and putting in a switch. What else can be done, if anything?

On my year the auto-dim has a switch and you can turn it on or off. Also, it is tied into the reverse signal and goes off when you have the trans in reverse. I have a shell on mine and even with it off I can hardly see out the back. Strong backup lights help also but I've noticed that being higher in this truck with the dark windows makes night backups tough, I even added a backup alarm in case I'm backing in a crowded area.

Is the switch in an obvious area? I'm almost certaint I don't have one :)

All auto dim mirrors have the on/off switch on them it is on the front of the mirror below the mirror face, there is a button and a green LED that is lit when it is on... . If you do not have the switch then you do not have an auto dimming mirror

Maybe I should of been a bit more clear in my orignal post. the "DEFAULT" mode is _on_. No matter what. once the key is turned off and you restart the truck, the mirror is on again. I just wish to eliminate the the needed to turn it off every time I get in the truck and leave some place at night.

And with this time of the year, night is at 4:30pm. :(

Ah I see said the blind man, the only way you could disable it would be to just cut power to it all together in the headliner... .

Heh, I suppose. Put a huge big red covered switch in the dash to active the rear-view mirror dimmer now :) hehehehe

Now that I've gotten used to it, I like it. It took a while before I started to appreciate it, but now it's a good thing.

There's been a few times where the sun was DIRECTLY in the mirror. It sneaks up on you when you make a turn and BAM! But these things don't tend to work in the daylight like that :)

You could always just unplug the harness that runs down to the mirror. It would not work then because it does require 12v to dim. That way you won`t have to cut anything.

Naw, it needs to be able to be turned on while in motion. I do like the idea of it there, just on a need to use basis. I think I'll splice in a switch. This appears to be the only solution. .

Thanks guys.

As Mike Crossley stated in his post, the switch is on the bottom of the mirror and if you turn the mirror off it is off. On the face of the mirror at the top is a small round hole that is the sensor to sense the light from the vehicle behind you, that is what triggers the auto feature to dim. If you turn it off it stays in daylight mode. If you don't have the auto mirror then you have the traditional flip lever that tilts the mirror. Another way to determine if you have it is to look above and behind the mirror and see if there is a wire coming out. I would think it would be switchable as mine is but if it isn't you could place a switch in the power lead, maybe someone here with a shop manual could look up the wire color for you, Mike is Mr. Electrical Wizard so maybe he will help you out.
