Within the last couple of weeks, my '97 auto will intermittently refuse to shift out of 2nd gear when accelerating from a stop. To rectify this situation, I have to actually turn the key off and shut down the truck. After restarting, everything is cool.

The problem has occured when the rig has been cold, warm of whatever. Uphill, downhill , on the flats... seems to make no difference. I cannot begin to predict when it will occur. It just does.

I tried a search on this topic, but nothing turned up. I'm sure it's been discussed before, but what keywords to search for?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Tim

I have a 96 with an auto transmission and had trouble with the 2-3 shift also. When the problem first started it only ocurred when it was cold outside and the truck had been sitting for a while. As the problem got worse it happened year round. I talked to Bil Kondolay at DTT and he told me about a problem with a seal in the trans that wears out and causes the problem. I never tried stopping and turning the key off to make it go away though, I just let off the go pedal and it would eventually shift. Once the trany shifted through the gears a couple of times and built up some heat the problem would go away until it cooled down again.

I can guess

But it probably won't be right!

I think that the shifts on your truck are all electronically controled. Assuming that you have checked the fluid with the engine hot and idling in neutral and it's full, try looking for trouble codes. It could be a connection or a bad solonoid.

I don't know mush about automatics and less than that about the '96 and newer ones...

Worst case, give Dave Goerend a call, he should be able to help you out.
