Thanks for looking. I have found a place that sells auto meter gauges for $40 less (EGT) then anybody else. According to the salesmen he assured me that it comes with everything. What exactly should it come with. I am doing a pre and post mount. I love gauges!!!!!

groundpounder,

Regardless of which AutoMeter gauge you decide on, be sure to get the correct thermocoupling. AutoMeter part #5244.

Groundpounder,

Make sure its not the 600°-1600° EGT gauge. You don't want this one. This is the cheapie that a vendor had.

Get the 0°-1600° and the pyrometer probe Rollcast recommended.

It's a $200 gauge & thermocouple, but worth it. Very good & accurate gauge.

Autometer has a very good webpage: http://www.autometer.com/hp/index.html

Or order them from carparts.com with one of the coupons. I ended up deciding to get 2 pyros, one pre and one post (wanted to do it at once rather than add another later), and paid about $110 for each setup ($110 for the gauge and correct pyro).

carparts.com may not be the best, but if you're not in a super hurry, they do pretty well.

For "Bombers on a Budget", (ME!), the Autometer 600-1600 is not a bad deal. I got mine for around 64 bucks including probe, wires, etc. Works like a champ! Since I mounted it pre-turbo, I don't use it for cool-down, anyway. Even before I got my pyro, I ALWAYS let my turbo cool by idling a while. (And I also have a 900 foot driveway, so by the time I idle down it, the temps are way down. ) But I can monitor the all-important high-end EGT's, now. #ad

I found a place that sells the whole kit with the right pyro for $129 per gauge. So needless to say I shall have a pre and post, for that price I can't go wrong!!

Rollcast,

The Autometer #5244 probe/thermocouple, Is this a 1/8" or 1/4" probe?
Just wondering so when I get a set too, I'll know what to buy.

Phil

I agree with Hemidart. I have the 0-1600 guage. Using a 3 pillar set they were so easy to install. Everything came from Auto meter and cost about $300. 00 including tax at local speed shop in Tampa, FL. They are great. The tubing for boost quage could have been a foot longer but works.

My setup with Autometer boost/pyro/transmission and two gauge pod was $124 from CarParts. I bought 12 feet of tubing from NAPA for around 2 bucks.

the 5244 pyro kit comes with 10' of hose as the 4244 has only 8'. Also the 5244 did not come with the clamp. Does this sound right so far?? The guy said I would need to weld the nut to the elbow for the temp sensor. I guess I need to get some instructions first to better understand the concept. I don't need the clamp do I ???????

Phil,
I believe p/n 5244 probe is 3/16". You could double check the Autometer web site.

GroundPounder,

The best place to put the Thermocouple is Pre-Turbo, or in the exhaust manifold (see below). You don't need or want the clamp type T-Couple. You won't need the 'Bung' or weld-in-fitting. You will drill & thread you own hole.

If you want to run it Post-turbo, you can drill & tap the cast iron elbow that comes off the turbo. Or buy a pre-tapped one from Geno's garage. You won't need to weld anything.

See some installation instructions here: http://www.dieselpage.com/gipda.htm

Hey Guys,
I'm running my probe pre-turbo which I thought was a good spot. What is the point of running pre and post turbo probes isn't this overkill? Confused!
Jim

Jim, running both is more or less overkill although, running an additional pyrometer post turbo will facilitate more accurate shut down temp. readings (for the turbo).

Whew! You guys scared the wee outa me! I've had my Autometer 2646 egt gauge and probe #5249 in my truck for 18k troublefree miles. After reading JNutter's post, I had visions of my probe coming apart and eating my turbo! I called Autometer this morning to set the record straight.
According to Autometer's tech, the #5249 probe is a sturdy one, well adapted to the Cummins exhaust stream. (He told me this one was popular with the
Miata turbo crowd, who TUNE for 1400-1600 degrees!)Ward, the Autometer tech, said they've never had one come apart, and have sold tons of them. So I'll sleep better tonight!

I know I'm missing some functionality, by not having 0-600 degree capability. Someday, I'll probably upgrade to a full-sweep guage. But for $52, (I looked at my invoice, and my original post was wrong, it was less. ), I couldn't pass it up. I actually got gauged for $117.
