I ran into town today truck ran fine, shifted fine, no problems, parked truck for about 1 1/2 hrs, jumped back in headed down the road and the trans would not shift out of first gear unless i nailed the throtle, i'm talkin red line shift, but after that it would not shift from second to third, i stoped and checked the throtle shift cable adjustment that goes down to the trans, it looked good and had not moved, but in order to get the trans to shift had to pull the adjustment slide all the way forward about 3/4" past the recomended setting listed in the service manual, at this setting it seems to shift ok but the throtle is noticably harder to push.

Is there somthing in the trans that could have come loose or broken??

Has anyone else had this problem??

RD, this sounds like a valve body or at worse a governor problem. I would start by servicing the trans and make sure you retorque the valve body. If that doesn't fix it then take it to a transmission shop and have the line pressure and governor pressure checked.

Have you ever overheated it? If you have, the valve body could be warped just like a cylinder head will. unfortunatly you can't resurface a valve body.

But first, do the service then go from there. And don't forget to put the k/d adjustment back.

good luck -dave=

Thanks Dave,

?? Does the KD adjustment change line pressure in the trans?

with the KD at factory adjustment the trans does'nt slip at all just does'nt shift, going to drop the pan tomarrow night i'll post what i find... ... ... ... . Rick

The k/d raises the line pressure to overcome the governer pressure to hold it back from shifting until the governer pressure overrides the line pressure to make it shift. CONFUSED YET???

But wait, there's more, and you'll need better drugs before I get into it.

But really, never drive it without the k/d adjusted properlly because it does control the pressures. And you can do some nasty things to your trans if it's out of adjustment.

One thing I've found that helps keep it in line is to run an extra lite spring from the k/d rod to the front so it will pull the k/d rod into the throttle fulcrum. This will insure that when you back off the throttle so does the k/d.

have fun -dave-

Dave,

Make sure the KD lever is free on the trans. The KD sahft runs through the center of the shifter shaft. A little rust build up and BAM, KD sticks in WOT position. This will cause very high shifts because the trans thinks you have your foot in it. This is a common problem on all of Chrysler's hydraulically shifted transmissions. Trans service probably wouldn't be a bad idea either.
