Has anyone tried using the AlpaOBD APP?

Is it possible to program the factory auto start to run longer than the 10 minutes? It's been a bit nippy lately, it's - °27 below 0 this morning and with the barely adequate block heater the windows aren't defrosting. I know once I install a oil pan heater the interior will build heat sooner. I have a winter front from Geno's installed, do these trucks prefer one side or other to make better heat?

In the old school way, we always opened the same amount on each side, this was to keep the pull on the fan even and not burn up the bearing with lop sided forces, just don't open them up much.

It's nice this little diesel makes heat much sooner then my '03 3500. It goes to dealership tomorrow for the recall and oil leak, see what they say about run time w/auto start. Thanks for reply Jihn

Asked the dealership if it's possible to extend run time with auto start, was told no. Also asked one of their wrenches that walked in to grab my key if I could add 2nd block heater, he said there isn't room. I will add oil pan heater when I get my truck back. This morning it was - 27° below 0 and after 9 minutes of idle time I had ice/frost melted off the windshield the size of silver dollar.

More than 10 minutes of cold idle is when it's considered extreme and not-recommended, which is likely why it shuts off. The 6.7 will run shorter than that if it's really cold out.

Do you have a winter front? No ED experience, but on my 5.9 with a winter front at temps in the -20's frost wasn't an issue. Are you sure the block heater is working?

Run a separate cord to a outlet on a different breaker than the block heater and put a household ceramic disc heater in the cab. Run it's cord through the driver's side door so you don't forget to unplug it before taking off. A 2 hour timer before you have to leave worked for us in cold country.

Once I start moving things heat up sooner than my '03 Cummins. 80% is covered by the winter front. I've noticed it doesn't run any warmer according to the gauge with the winter front on. It's at the dealer for the oil leak, once it comes back I will start paying attention to coolant temp. What's the norm temp these trucks run? Thanks for getting back to me.

If there are extra flaps to close then I would close them all below 0° unless you start seeing it run warmer.

It won't increase the temp, but it does reduce the heat being blown away by wind which helps warmup, block heater, and idle operation.

No clue on temp, but a quick search shows that they run from 205-225 empty.

I can close off the entire grill. I bought the winter/summer front from Geno's, it's roll up velcro type. I may be wrong, don't think my truck runs that warm: °205-°225. Since dealer has it, might as well have them check it. Thank you

You might be a candidate for a Webasto or Espar heater. I know on my 6.7 I set the exhaust brake and throttle up with the cruise control buttons to about 1300 and she gets toasty fast. Just leave that winter front closed and don't take it off until it's in the 30's. The cooling system on these trucks is really good and you'll know when it's time to take the winter front off by the fans buzzing all the time.

Does anyone know if the EcoDiesel can have the high idle via the cruise buttons like the Cummins? I know Green Diesel had a high idle option but since the EPA has struck again that's not an option any longer.

Without PTO capabilities i dont think so.

To be honest, ESPAR sounds like an overkill for an ECO, who wants to throw so much money into that dark hole?

I think one of those is overkill on the EcoDiesel. I'll add oil pan heater and call it good.

No the Ecodiesel won't do the high-idle trick like the Cummins will. I tried that on my wife's not too long after we first bought it. If you turn on the heater/defroster it will high-idle itself till it reaches a certain temperature. Not sure what that its, I have never let it sit idling that long.

Retirednak: I am surprised you are having that much issue getting the ice to melt off with it being plugged in. Granted we don't get as cold as much as you down here in Wyoming in winter, but we do see some days of those balmy -20 to -40 temps. Ours gets plugged in all night, start it and within 10 minutes it's starting to de-frost.

Mine is still at dealership and asked them to look into it. I have the block heater on a timer, comes on 4 hours before I need it. It could be that I'm use to the heat my Cummins puts out, it melts ice off the windshield size of a basketball cooking all night. Since this is my first winter with the ED, I may be overreacting. Thanks fellas

My 05 would hold the heat/distribution setting in the HVAC so as warm coolant moved thru the block/heater core thru convection warmer air would keep the windshield from developing as much frost.

After I shut my '18 down I hear the HVAC system moving under the dash. I wonder if that movement also happens on your 1500 and if it reduces/prevents the convective airflow over the heater core.
