auto trans fluid as diesel additive

Well I dunno but the guy I bought the truck from had be adding 1/2 qt auto trans fluid /tankful of diesel Says a diesel mech told him it is the way to go! Any thoughts or experience with this?? baron

I don't think such a small amount would hurt anything at all. From what I understand, the additives typically found in ATF might create deposits on the injectors, but I would think you'd have to use much more than a pint in 30 gallons.

Well this is only my opinion but..... ATF was not meant for combustion,, it was meant to provide lubrication and other specific properties for a transmission.

Injector pumps and injectors can be pretty fussy.

Since our pumps are lubricated SOLELY by return fuel, I prefer to use a properly designed additive for lubrication, cetane boost, smoke control, pour point, gel point, etc. ... not a lubricant for a transmission that was not meant to be "consumed or burnt".

Sounds right to me as well... ... ... Do we have any consensus on what kind of additive should be added to every tankful of diesel? Or if not a consensus..... what is the most economical for the best results?? and where are we buying such product??? thanks baron

Cummins recommends not adding anything. I tried some additives but really could not tell any difference in the way it ran nor in MPG so I gave it up. The rotary pumps on a 1st gen might benifit from an additive that provides some lubrication. I have 204K on my '95 so far and it runs smoother than it did when it was new. No additives except for a period of experimentation.

I will have to agree with bushwakr ATF was not designed to be combusted and therefore how clean it burns isn't known. I worked at diesel injection service in Lubbock for a while and they didn't recommend ATF as a fuel additive but sold additive's that helped with the lubricity,cetane,gel temp,etc...

I read on the owners manual of my '92 that there is a limit of "ash" content recommended... not to exceed 1. 85% if memory serves. This was to avoid some sort of build up on the valves. I'd be concerned about adding a "non-combustible" to the fuel tank myself.

Hey guys probably not a good thing to give to our trucks but atf does work to help stop jelling diesel fuel had an old Freight liner with a 318 in it a good many years ago and got a batch of summer fuel on my last run before Xmas, got home shut the truck down for the holidays and had two tanks of jello when it came time to go back to work lss atf turned jelly back to diesel. bill
