I think that I read somewhere that there is a way to change the default of lockup on to lockup off when starting your engine. Does anyone know how to do this. It seems like it would be good for guys like me who drive a lot in town and shut the engine off a lot.

I second this request! I live in the mountains and am always pushing this button.

Bob,

I don't this is a simple wiring deal. The OD lockout button is a dead simple setup. It's just a momentary make and break button like a door bell. The light is just a 12v light. I moved mine to a switch panel that I installed in place of the stock cup spiller. I just used a button and light I got from Radio Shack instead of trying to move the stock button. The button just toggles a flip/flop type of circuit in the computer that controls the transmission. As far as I can tell the computer powers up in the not locked out state and the state flips whenever the button is pushed. In order to change this you would have to change the power on state in the computer. I have no idea how you would do that. You might rig up some way to make the circuit once when the engine starts. That could be kind of tricky.

I used to be on a e-mail list called "Dirt list" or some-such. Not too many people on it had diesels, and I was tired of hearing about everyone's car alarms, V-8 sparkplugs and such. The one thing discussed was an inverter that reversed the od switching sequence.
It was about a $35 part. I've lost track of that list though so I can't tell you anymore about it.

Josparkz,

Thanks for the tip. I've been searching since I read your post, and I came up with mention in an article of an "InterMotive Overdrive Inverter. " Does this sound like the one you heard of? It's supposed to do just what we've been talking about here. I haven't tracked it down yet, but I'm on the scent. Thanks again!

LaserBob--I'll post whatever info I find.

Here’s what I’ve found:

The company is called InterMotive Products. Their web address is
http://www.intermotive.net/.

Phone: 800-969-6080

email: products@intermotive.net

Their web page is a bit confusing with no real product listing. I’ve emailed them and will follow tomorrow with a phone call.

You guys are just great. I knew that I read that somewhere one time. That may have been on Dirt List or whatever that was. Thanks all for the help.

Now this is a cool tool! I just spoke to a rep at Intermotive and got the details on this device. There are actually two of them: one “inverts” or reverses the state of the overdrive switch at startup; the second one actually allows you to set the speed of overdrive engagement. Apparently these gadgets are a big number with police fleets (the one here in Atlanta just installed them) for the obvious performance reasons and also for reduced wear.

They are sending me details by fax. If it contains more information than is on their site (listed in earlier post), I’ll post it.
