I have had a rattling noise coming from under the truck now for a couple of wks. ignored it because of time/money/stupidity now its coming back to bite me. I have the noise when: 1) i first start the truck and its in neutral; 2) when i put it into gear, either D or R, and i am stopped. It goes away when: 1) i rev the engine, (in neutral or in gear); 2) when i am actually driving; 3) after just starting and a few minutes in neutral . yesterday, a hot day, on a short trip, (less than 5 miles), temp went from 100 to 200 in a very short time. once i got home and put into neutral, temp came back down to 170. I chkd the fluid - no burnt smell, no coolant evident, level was correct. truck shifts as it should. Usually the temp doesn't go above 150 on this trip and i haven't driven the truck since to see if this one time occurence or ongoing problem. i don't have equipment to chk pressures. temp probe is in the pan - i am using a mag-hytec pan(not a deep dish). before i start tearing things apart, i would like to know what thing to concentrate on. all ideas are welcome. Thx.

Not sure about the temp, could be a symptom or totally unrelated.

Check the mount where the down pipe mounts to the trans on the passenger side. Its famous for getting loose and\or wearing out the rubber bushing inside of it. Check all the rest of your exhaust to make sure you don't have a broken hanger and the exhaust pipe is hitting something.

Flex plate is another possibility or even the TC. Before going that far though, make sure all the flex plate to TC bolts are tight and pull the cover off the bottom of the bell housing to look for FOD.

On more thing, check the dip stick tube and make sure it is not touching something. They will make an awful racket if it is touching body or exhaust pipe.
